Full Version: Requests for chats are really spam

I am beginning to get numerous "requests" for chats that are really commercial advertisements. Most (maybe all) come from China. I do not use "skype me", I have my privacy setting so that I'm visible only to my contacts.

There is no way to block requests, and maybe there shouldn't be. But surely there is some way for Skype to block blanket "requests" to the entire planet. I know I can refuse them and block the user, but I am doing that an awful lot and it's getting to be a real nuisance, especially on my Skype phone where I have to press three buttons to do so. In the process of blocking them, I've already read their advertisement whether I want to or not, and that's all they care about.

Email spam started out small, it's time to nip this in the bud and it shouldn't be all that hard.

I would assume you are talking about the "Request to share contact details" messages you receive.

Yes, exactly. I may not have the terminology exact, because I use the Italian version, and I'm translating terminology into English.

I get requests to share contact details *very*frequently. I have the Philips dual mode DECT/Skype phone, and to refuse and block, I have to select "details", at which point I can select "refuse and block". However, the details are a wordy advertisement, and I'm sure they don't care at all to share contact details, they just want me to read the ad.

This is what I call spam. They succeed in getting me to see their ad, and that's all they want. I want Skype to get rid of this spam, and as I said, it shouldn't be difficult. Just let people make the first 10 requests free on a given day, and then charge for all the rest. That would let people send legitimate requests free, and would eliminate the spammers who broadcast requests to millions of people.

I understand you problem but there is nothing that you can do about is other than to report it to abuse@skype.net but as it is only really spam I don't think they will do much about it.

As you say you have your privacy settings set to the highest but even set that way Skype still have to allow people to request contact details even if the person is not known, Skype a really using it as a first introduction message.

It's ONLY SPAM? That is an attitude that I hope isn't shared at the pinnacles of Skype management.

Could you please explain to me why Skype has to allow requests to be broadcast to millions of people simultaneously? If the practice gets popular, it will kill Skype off real quick.
