We are getting nowhere. The Skype engineer should provided some answers or just that iPAQ Voice Messenger is not for Skype.

lets not mix phones here shall we?
First of all I have tried skype on tytn II with the PPC version myself and calls work great.
Second iPAQ Voice Messenger works also as far as I know but that phone needs the Smartphone version.

Ia have the same problem. The outgoing and incoming sound is disrupted, like happens sometimes when you have slow internet connection. Some words just cut. But in this case the internet connection is very good and I am sitting just near the WiFi router that also provides good connectivity. Running Skype from a laptop through the same wireless internet connection provides clear sound.
Any help?

I am getting it just calling the Skype Service. The voice that I here from the service is chopped. And also the recorded repaly. I installed the latest Skype 2.2 (Nov 7) version for Pocket PC on the TyTN II.
Also, if I run Skype from a laptop through the same wireless internet connection, it provides clear sound.

Good Morning,
Whenever I call, I always have to use like speakerphone mode.
Everybody can hear. I tried to switch that speaker and wanted to call as a normal cellphone, not a push to talk. But I failed.
I searched on Skype support page, but they don't have the solution so far.
Thanks in advance

Right then, time to enter the ring!
Got my brand new htc tytn ii last week and have spent a long time trying to get Skype working properly, I have tried every version I can get my hands on including the suggested fix of .18 beta but to no avail. When calling the test line audio is "Choppy" (interrupted, repeated etc). The phone is as standard from Orange. So let's try and be scientific to help the Skype engineers out!
If your calls are the same as mine i.e audio is clear but with sections dropping out and sections being repeated:
1. Call the echo/sound test several times to check that this is what's happening.
2. Try a different wi-fi network.
3. Try taking off encryption for a brief period from your wi-fi network.
4. Stop all processes apart from Skype.
4. Post as many details of your setup on here as you can.
Mine are:
Carrier: Orange
Skype version: 2.2.0.37
Operator version: 24.181.1.612
Rom Version: 1.81.61.2 wwe
Rom date: 09/20/07
Radio version 1.27.12.29
Protocol version: 22.45.88.07h
Peter, I have a .cap ethereal dump of a bad sound test call if you need it with encryption off.
Please Skype do something about this, this is a fantastic PDA and Skype is a good service. There must be some subtle difference between your test platform and those of users for whom skype has now become unusable!
Thanks

Well folks,
My TyTn II does it too! I've got both of the problems described above...
Talking to my wife, who's on the same LAN, she on a wired LAN PC, me on my TyTn II. I get the sounds from the speakerphone, so it would be very nice if the settings would enable the user that sound goes trough the normal phone speaker, instead of aloud trough the room.
(good tip for the Bluetooth headset link, but i'm sure that there's a better solution: keeping the phone directly to my ear)
Then the sound is pretty choppy too, like i'm connected at a very low datarate 3g network (which is not the case)
This is something i wouldn't expect if one's connected on the very same LAN, although i'm connected wirelessly @ 54G there shouldn't be problems imho. Our broadband connection does 22 mbit down and 1,3 mbit up, so should be plenty too.
Version i use is the 2.2.0.37 Skype for Windows Mobile November 2007 release. Which works flawless for skype chat (although it takes ages for all historical chat messages to appear in the TyTn 2). But calling with Skype simply is not usable.
On my RTX dualphone skype works great attached to my laptop using the same 54G network, calling with the same lady i described earlier.
Problem can therefore pretty much be narrowed down to the TyTn II if you ask me.
I also tried the smartphone version, but that displays pretty blurred (icons don't show, names look weird etc) and sound quality is the same or worse.
Looking forward to replies from Skype people that know what can be done about this problem. For me personally i intended to use the TyTnII as my "personal skype communicator" when i'm at home and at work.
Both locations have a nice 54G network and a more then sufficiently working broadband internet connection.
But for as long as this problems stay, i think i just need to keep the RTX dualphone's connected to the PC's.... Which imho is too bad!
Thanks for any insights Skype peeps!!!!!

Thanks guys for taking the time to detail your problems, I will forward them to the team working on this.
Just to sum up some of the info that is already out there but keeps comming up.
1. The speakerphone issue. Windows Mobile doesn't allow any third party application (maybe with hacks, I don't know) to access the front speaker (earpiece), thus the only available speaker for skype to use is the rear one. Use a wired headset instead! (Bluetooth not being supported is a known issue)
2. Windows Mobile version uses a different audio engine than the desktop one. The desktop engine is made by skype, the wm version engine is licensed. The desktop version has a great codec (SVOPC) that enables great call quality and unfortunately this codec is not present in the licensed engine. The skype audio engine doesn't run on wm because of the processing power constraints. This means that WM -> PC calls will not be the same quality as a PC -> PC call. This doesn't mean it should be choppy, unusable etc.
3. I in my replies am not reffering to test platforms but real phones with latest public release that I or another trusted (by me) source tested on.

Thanks a lot Peter for your in depth reply to our troubles. The speakerphone issue is the worst thing. The bluetooth solution suggested by one of the topic's repliers is a nice one, but having a carkit in my car and an ear to hold my phone to is enough. I got rid of the BT earpiece and i hate to use a wired headset tbh. Its limiting in all possible ways.
If there was a hack to access the "right" (front) speaker it would be really nice if that could be selected in some way or another. Using skype as our intercompany communications solution (HQ, office spain, office india, my home office) i'd expect the Skype for WIndows Mobile to be usable like it's intended to be used. As a phone....
Anyways, if it's impossible, well then, there's the RTX kit and the Belkin WiFi Skype phone that both do an excellent job for me. It's just that i'd really love to have just one device instead of the usual 2 or maybe even 3.
My 2 cents... :-)

Weirdly on a skype to skype call last night (My HTc tytnII on WIfi to a friend 2 miles up the road on a "3" GPRS phone), call quality was OK( OK not astounding!). I phoned the test call facility straight after and it was as bad as ever. Would this type of call be any different?

Here's the bluetooth audio program that works on my htc tytn II wm6 and a motorola ht700 bluetooth earpiece. I have tested this on wifi and 3g cellular with decent success.
Spent hours searching for this so I could use skype with my earpiece, can't remember what forum I found this on;
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/get-bluetooth-audio-v1-0.html
You need to use your tytn to go to the site and download it, from what I understand this is because it's a cab file.
It's pretty simple once it's installed.... Open the program and you just turn on , or turn off the blue tooth by touching the button that comes up on the screen. This simply routes the audio speaker on the back of the phone to the ear, and the mic is now the blue tooth unit's mic.
It's not very sophisticated but it works as a temporary fix till something better comes out. I couldn't get the techsoft product to work because voice dial software on my unit would take over.
I use it for skype and I have fun listening to music with my headset this way, even though I don't have the stereo headset (yet!)
When you receive a call on the cell phone you can still receive it the typical way by touching the answer button on your bluetooth earpiece. When you hangup the phone by touching the button on the earpiece it will hangup the call like normal..... but ..... the music will continue but it now comes out of the speaker on the back of the phone till you go in this little program and touch " ON " to get your earpiece connected again.
... you will also need to do this to make skype to reconnect to the earpiece as well.
I will say the audio sounds just fine when using this, but the mic sounds pretty scratchy to the person on the other end... not sure if this is my headset, connection, or mic gain structure with bluetooth, or all of the above.

echo123 uses the desktop audio engine so this can be why the quality with it is bad. I also like to point out that in my experience it is sometimes bad even with desktop skype even though all other calls are great.
Therefor i think testing with it is only good to find microphone related issues. Call quality of the test call may be irrelevant for Skype for Windows Mobile. I am further checking into this.

I too had choppy play/recording/playback on my first test call.
I went into the Wireless Manager -> Settings -> Wireless LAN -> Power Mode. Mine was set on Best Battery (battery was down to 2 bars - not sure if it self configures based on power left) Adjusted to best performance and retried test - still had a little chop but much better (clean playback form Skye test call, a bit garbled on recorded bit).
I AM using Skype over a bluetooth stereo headset without any hacks (Plantronics Pulsar 260)
System Setup
Skype for Windows Mobile Version 2.2.0.37
Selected Wifi only on Skype Setup
Device - AT&T Tilt, WM 6 Pro
OS 5.2.1620 Build 18125.0.4.2
R 1.27.12.11
G 22.45.88.07h
D 1.57.00.00
Signal on Tilt was bouncing between 1/3 - 2/3 - once I increased power it stayed between 1/2 and 2/3 consistently higher (Wireless Manager -> Settings -> Wireless LAN -> Main), WPA encrypted,
Router Linksys WRT-54GS
Cable Broadband (BF2 plays smoothly (wired) and Skype on PC works fine wireless)
I have not bothered running a packet loss or latency test on my Tilt, but those are both possibilities as well.
Hope this may help some of you out.

I am fed up with skype I feel it too much hype
I have a 24MB download 2MB upload adsl 2 connection but calling the skype testing service is still crap on my HTC TyTN II. When the service is talking you can still hear it ringing. Utter rubbish
All those question about what version, is it skype to skype, what version is the other person using is really annoying.
No one should tell lies and same using skype even comes close to making real calls. As far as I am concerned Skype should admit that the mobile software is still beta and no where near a usable product

bad news i have brought 2 tytn ii's and have installed SKYPE ver 2.2.0.37 on BOTH units and have experienced this "choppy" sound quality aswell
BUT I HAVE gone for testing angles and think i have FOUND a problem that MIGHT help every one out there and those who seek to FIX it
TURN OFF THE PHONE SECTION OF THE TYTN AND SOUND "Q" IS GREAT
so if you want skype to work BEST dont use the PHONE part thus releasing the CPU from its MAIN job
this allows the CPU to focus on skype
or try running a cpu little version
it works but it does invalidated the point of a phone/pda
find a fix for THAT skype techs
ps dont forget to turn phone ON when finished hehe

Hi,
Skype for Windows Mobile hasn't got video call support at this time. You need the PC version to make such a call.
Sound quality seems to vary. What we know so far is that adjusting power of wifi reception to best performance helps a lot, also I read here that turning of phone also helps (Thanks for info "a mad hacker")

Using Skype on my TyTN II uses the speaker phone, but using it on a Samsung i616 (BlackJack 2) works nicely with the earpiece speaker. Any reason why the WM Standard version can use the earpiece speaker or is it just the device?

There are certain phones that work because the OEM (Manufacturer) enabled access.

Indeed. It all depends on OEM. Go figure. I would expect this a part of WM (option to select output speaker that is) but no, OEM has to provide it.

Hi Gang,
Update on the HTC TYTN II issues you're all having...
I was having the same problem with my phone, choppy calls, no bluetooth support, speaker phone simply didn't work and the voice stuff just didn't work I was using the Version: 2.2.0.37 Release date: November 7, 2007 latest release...
So I installed a beta of skype I got a little while back: v2.2.0.18
Also I installed the bluemusic 2.0 mentioned at
http://www.teksoftco.com/ This latest version seems to work better than the previous Bluemusic I used before ( aq lot better) which was also v2.0 - there's something different with this one even though Teksoft doesn't give it a different version...
So good news, all my calls are clear and work with Bluetooth as well - over 3G.
Hope this helps.

I am na owner of a HTC TyTN II aswell, and in my opinion the only "issues" for me, using "Skype for Windows Mobile" is the already mentioned "Loudspeaker only" (and no earpiece)
I agree too that it would be a great thing if there could be a video-support for WM devices with camera(s) but i would much rather have support for sending SMS from skype on my WM device.
Why would i need skype-SMS when the phone neccesarily have SMS? Mostly becasue i an often sending international SMS, and often when sending from my older cellphones (or from the phone-part of my TyTN II) the SMS would never arrive. But if I send the SMS from skype on my computer, they would arrive safely, and pretty fast too.
Now the speaker issue would perhaps be difficult to solve from what i hear (due to the thoughtlessness and license-hungry OEMs) but if i could send SMS from WMskype I owuld be overjoyed, and also i would truly have a way to bring skype with me on the go. Then I could just buy some bluetooth headset or so for the calls.
Any chance of seeing SkypeSMS on WM though? I don´t recon it should be too much of a challenge, considering it would not need any OEM-limited speakers?
-Thanks for any insight!

Hi, I have been trying refusly to get skype to work even half decently on my tytnII, so far I have tried all of the mentioned things pretty much:
Close all running programs
Disable the phone
Disable WiFi security (not always going to be an option)
Use headset
All of these makes the test woman talk more proper, but my voice stil isn't anywhere near good enough.
However, if an older version works, which makes sense, since skype has been around for ages, and the TYTN II is much faster than some of the older phones around at that time, then please, somebody send a link, perhaps Skype should post the link for those having problems?

Hi
Refefence to my last forum reply this is what i have just recieved from SKYPE support. Its not version 6 but the latest operation version of 24.328.1.610
I suspect. So I am afraid we have to wait for the new version to be released.
"Hello David,
Thank you for contacting Skype Support.
Unfortunately latest version of Skype for PPC is not supported on Windows Mobile 6 or higher. Our developers are working on this and hopefully new version will be out soon. At the moment we can't provide you with the exact release date.
Best regards,
Andre

Hi Péter,
I have downloaded Skype for windows mobile on my HTC TYTN II, it installed fine with active sync, but when I try to start it up it gets stuck in the startupscreen.
Should I install the PPC version?
Thanks for helping
Mark
