Hi,

I have a Philips VOIP 841 and it has been working fine for a couple of months. It has suddenly started to show "System is starting up" and is now stuck like this. We have tried to reset the handset and the base unit many times now, but nothing seems to help.

I would like to try and upgrade the firmware on the handset, but am unable to find out what the IP address of the phone is as all useful services are "unavailable".

Any ideas that might help?

Thanks in advance,
Ash

It's been down for about 2 weeks now, don't think the skype service is down as can use skype fine through my mac. Anyone else have any other ideas on what I could try?

I just had that happen to me - I unplugged the base unit, waited about 20 sec, plugged it back in and then held the button (the only one it has) down until both the lights on top started flashing slowly. By teh time I got back to the handset (located in another room) it was online again.

This had absolutely no effect, anybody else got any better ideas? Had this phone less than 2 days. It has never gotten past the "system is starting up" message. Probably going to return to amazon.com after owning it less than 3 days.

same problems with me... my phone doesn't connect either. It hasn't got an IP address so I can't try to login to it either. Do you guys get an IP address? Mine just says 0.0.0.0 for IP address and when i try to sign in, it says Unavailable.

First make sure voip base is connected to your router then check on your phone that you have a DECTconnection to base, If you dont have a connection there is usualy a little antena icon in top left corner,
if this isn't there or it says unregistered refer to manual and register the handset with the base..

then while it is still connected to router, unplug your router from power for 25 seconds.
I assume this is a single router setup where the router you unpluging is your DHCP router.

plug back in wait 15min to 1/2 hour as it may take time. if your computer can connect the phone should be able to connect...

Now if it still dosen't work, we have to check the routers settings to see if it has assigned an IP address to your phones base..

Type your routers IP address in the search bar of your browser like this.
http://192.168.0.1 this is the usual default address yours might be different.
If you have troubles call your provider. They should have all default passwords
and accessing instructions as the guy that installs your system need to know all this.

once your in you router check your lan settings there should be a section that displays the IP's leased to what mac address. If the mac address that appears on the bottom of your base dose not appear in this list.
then for some reason your router is not detecting it...
I had this problem repetitively and I believe it was because after connecting the voip base
you have to unplug your router and get it to reset for some reason...

To manualy assign an IP address to that mac address.
In your router enter an IP address to reserve for the
mac address found on bottom of base..
Routers are different so you may have to hunt for this setting.
but it should be in the general area of your other lan settings.
DO NOT CHANGE any DNS or GATEWAY settings.
Just reserve an IP address to the mac address found on bottom of base...
Unplug the etherenet cable from router then plug it back in.

I want you to make sure before doing any of this that you have looked at the
network settings from the phone and it says IP 0.0.0.0 and DHCP is enabled.
You should not have a manual configuration........... PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT WORKED,
and add any notes you might find imortant...

hope you get back online peace.

My phone did the same thing recently and I had to re-enter all of my area code and country info, I also had to re-enter my user and password.. So I do believe I just removed the batteries from the phone.. I did not reset the base... Hope this helps
I am kind of curiouse on what files I can modify in the .bin used to upgrade.
If you learn any thing cool upgrading let me know

I have been following as many possible solutions as I can.

I have 2 handsets on 2 different base stations - both sitting at the "system is starting up" error. They both used to work. I can only find 2 causes for the error

1) we went on holiday for 10 days and left the phone logged out - and had the error on return
2) the error appeared after using the handset "reset all" option

i have tried innumerable combinations of:

- taking the batteries out >4 hours
- turning the base station off
- turning the router off
- resetting the base station by inserting pin
- resetting the base station by holding down the 2 buttons (this certainly solves any problem of an unregistered handset not finding a base station)
- I wanted to upgrade the handset firmware - but all options re: s/w upgrade are showing "unavailable"
- I can see the base station on my router - so I assume that that aspect is ok, but the handset will not find either of the 2 basestations I have available. (these 2 basestations are on different routers in different locations - just to be clear!)
- finally I called the Belgian tech support - who told me to take the unit back to the store; in frustration I phoned the UK tech support who told me that they have no real knowledge of these types of problems with this handset. Which I find hard to believe if I read the number of people posting.

So this is my last attempt to see if anyone has any other suggestions, before I lug all the stuff back to the shop....

...and hopefully Philips may do the decent thing and update their tech support if this IS a known problem...!!!

Mine is screwed up to. It used to be I could unplug it and plug it in every couple of days and it would work. It worked great last fall. I'm ready to throw it away. I thought Philips was a good brand to... I tried different routers, static vs dynamic IPs. I tried unregistering the phone from the base. Now it won't reregister...

I had a phillips voip 841 "system is starting up" problem. Removing the power supply to the base had no effect and neither did removing the ethernet cable. Rebooting the router didn't help.

While examing the base station I noticed a pin hole just above the telephone RJ 11 port marked "reset". Using a bent paper clip or toothpick GENTLY insert it into this pin hole until you feel that the reset button is depressed. This will reset the operating software. You might have to push and hold the reset button, that's what I did. After this the unit reset and the unit logged into Skype and displayed my Skype name and credit balance. bigsmile.png

Hi I have only had my Philips 841 running for two days had the same thing happen to me.
"System Starting" fixed. After reading Glenm2 suggestion I tried that and Hey Presto all was well Thanks for that. I had tried all of the other suggestions and they did not work. The phone itself seems to work very well.

Hi
I just bought the Philips 841 VOIP as well, a couple of weeks ago and everything has been working great. Yesterday I got this "system is starting up" problem as well and I cannot get into the phone any longer. Have tried taking batteries out etc, etc. I have examined the base as Glenm2 mentions :-); call me lame, but I cannot find the RJ11 port/reset button you talk about. Do I need to actually take the base apart??
Thanks for any help.

Me again...found the reset button but had to push it a couple of times and also unplugged everything from the base...then the sign-on came on again and it seems to be ok. My question is whether this happens often? and whether I should still keep the phone. Has this problem occurred for others more than once/twice??
Thanks

OK, I had the same issue with "System Starting Up" and it drove me nuts. So, on a hunch, I changed out the batteries, recharged the unit, and the problem went away. That may not be the fix-all, but it helped me.

I had the same problem. Powering down and using the reset seemed to fix it. I don't know how ofter this will occur, but this is the first time for me. I've been using the system for about 3 or 4 months with no problems.
