I just got that message too. saying it was from Skype Security Center. copied below. BUT, I am a newbie, and hit the link, which set up a scan saying I had all kinds of worms, etc. and that I had to PAY for an antivirus program. Had a really hard time shutting it down, decided to close everthing, reboot and run virus scans and adware programs, etc. which found a lot of dataminers & cookies that weren't there before. Also found a worm that had been QUARANTINED by my Anti-virus program, so all seems well.

ANY IDEAS ON WHAT TO DO NEXT??

It looks like spam (for scanandrepair.com).
Check and report the Skype username in this thread, otherwise just ignore it or block the user.

How can you block messages from someone who has not revealed identity?

I have blocked this same company several times this week. I am blocking them now with:

security.monitor.no17 as the user

They keep changing the number on the end and sending again and again.

This is the message I got this time:

Here are the other usernames that I have blocked:
security.center.014c
security.center.03|13
security.center.b0013
security.monitor.no17

I also have two more blocked users at security.system.... but I cannot read the full user name in the blocked people list.

Special Note:

I, too, just received said notice, did not click on link as something about it did not seem right but did try the roundabout way of entering the basic url in the address bar to see the home page and got the immediate scan and the difficult time in getting rid of it....

Now, note this:

The notice came when I was visiting a website which access has most recently produced similar notices (Error Safe is one and the reference is Microsoft). Apparently that site has been hacked possibly via one of their many ads as a notice came on the message board about said notices going out and the site management trying to do something about the matter.

In short, it's likely this is not something unique to Skype. Also, I want to thank the people who posted the message as that verified my suspicions.

If the spam messages are coming from unknown users, then the only solution is to block messages from unknown users.

In Skype for Windows, go to File | Privacy
Set the "Allow chats from" option to "only people in my Contact list"

This will force people to request authorization before they can send messages to you.

Hey All: Please remove the links in your posts to the scam websites. Also, if you're curious about the website DO NOT view it using IE!
Jeff-
I've received a few similar messages now... mine have only been from security.monitor.nj13:

(I changed the .'s to DOT's, it was a link when I got it...)

I've blocked that user now, but IMO, this is something that the powers that be should know about... Perhaps add something like "security" or "security.monitor" to the badname list...

The best part of it: I've only gotten these messages on my Fedora Core machine, not my Windows one worried.png tongueout.png

Jeff,
Please report the user to Skype either by using the form on the website, or by mail to abuse@skype.net, include the text of the message you received. (you don't have to make the link safe for Skype) giggle.png

I believe that Skype are trying to deal with this, since this particular spammer has created a new batch of user names. Now using security.monitor.njXX, previously using security.monitor.noXX. Your reporting on the forum is useful to other users, like me, to update our blocked users list but Skype customer service work through the official abuse reporting medium and are not obliged to peruse the forums and take requisite action
Everyone who receives this malicious spam should report it so that the good guys, (Skype & we users) can deal with this.

You might also like to try a Skype search for security.monitor or Security Monitor ® and block ALL the names that you find.

Seems that they are at it again. I just got the message mentioned above from user security.center.oskype17.

It seems Skype does not have a handle on this abuse. How do we report this misuse of Skype services to the Skype powers?
Pissed off Skype user
I've just had this as well. I looked all over the Skype website for how to report it, but I also couldn't find anything, which is astonishing.

If anyone from Skype is reading this thread, Skype phishing messages are not going to go away of their own accord. You need to have a way of reporting this kind of abuse.

FWIW, the user name of the phisher that contacted me was security.monitor.nj20

How to report a spammer to Skype:

1. Via this link.
This from the link Abuse (harassment, fraud, scam, spam, etc.)

2. By e-mail to abuse@skype.net

Include a copy of the offending chat message, and if to abuse@skype.net, your Skype user name as the person reporting.

Additionally, for your own protection, do a Skype search for Security Center ®, Security Monitor ®, security.monitor and/or Security Center. Block as necessary!
