Full Version: Can't start video (but camera preview works) in 3.5.0.214
Skype Community > English > Skype for Windows > Skype Video

Skype seems to recognise my webcam in options / video settings. The webcam settings button takes me to the camera's own options: brightness contrast etc.

But there's no button in Skype letting me start a video, not even during a call.

Thanks, in advance, for any help.

The button you are looking for is at the bottom of the Skype call window, after your call has connected. Do you also not get one there either? That would be strange, when Skype obviously sees your camera, as you have said. Alternatively you could just check that little box which says "start video automatically", which you can see in the image you posted.

Hmmm. What happens if the person you are calling has set their Skype not to accept video - I haven't tried that, does it cause the start video button not to appear on the other end?

No button there, either:

and "start video automatically" doesn't seem to have an effect either. The contact I tried it with had set skype to accept video.

Very strange indeed. I don't have any other concrete ideas, but getting a little more information might help:

- What version of skype are you running?

- What operating system, CPU, speed and memory does your computer have?

- What type and speed of internet connection do you have?

- I see from your image posting that you have a Philips camera (good choice) - is that the only camera you have, and the only one connected when you try this?

- Have you tried this with more than one other person?

- What version of skype are you running?
3.5.0.214

- What operating system, CPU, speed and memory does your computer have?
Windows XP, Celeron, 1.79GHz, 256MB

- What type and speed of internet connection do you have?
Broadband Modem, 2.2mbps

- I see from your image posting that you have a Philips camera (good choice) - is that the only camera you have, and the only one connected when you try this?
Yes, I only have the Philips camera and I've only tried that one with Skype.

- Have you tried this with more than one other person?
Yes, it's the same with more than one of my Skype contacts.

I can't seem to get skype to test my camera. The how-to information suggests that the button "Test My Webcam" should appear but I've got one called "Webcam Settings" which are the settings for the camera itself - contrast, colour, B/W etc.

I am having the same problem I am running a AMCAP vs 8 webcam and nowhere does it show a video icon on my screen. The cam has tested out fine though.

Please ensure that the party your are having the call with has activated video as well. Use this Skype Video Tutorial for reference.

I am also having precisely the same problem; Skype recognises the webcam in the "options", but there is no option to start video calling in chats.

Everything has worked fine in the past, up until at least week ago; I loaded the update during the troubles last weekend, and when that didn't work, loaded the latest. It still doesn't work.

My details:

- What version of skype are you running?
3.5.0.214

- What operating system, CPU, speed and memory does your computer have?
Windows XP, Pentium 4 CPU 2.4GHz, 512MB RAM

- What type and speed of internet connection do you have?
ADSL, 11 mbps

- I have a Logitech QuickCam Communicate

- The people I have tried to contact also had video activated.

I hope this helps in obtaining a speedy solution.

This is starting to sound like some kind of strange problem that Skype technical people are going to have to work out with you. Everything you say (both of you...) sounds right, if the video preview is correct and your contacts have accept video enabled, then you should get the Start Video button at the bottom of the Skype window. Sorry that I don't have any more good ideas.

Same Problem here....
camera recognised and tested but when I call no sign of the icon.
It was working perfect up to 10 days ago and since the last update it stopped working...
please help!

No problem, thanks for your time anyway.

One possible way you (or someone) could help - where can I download an older version of Skype? I can't find one anywhere on the site.

Many thanks in advance.

You can get it from www.oldversion.com lots of people have reported good results with 2.5.0.154.

Good luck.

I have the same problem. It occurred for the first time with version .202, before that it all worked like a charm. I have read a lot about this issue on different forums, seeing that this is a wide spread problem. Reinstalling older versions are said not to solve the issue, and it all seams to end up in the Skype developers laps.

Still waiting for a solution, and was expecting it with version .214, but nope.

That PC, by the way, is a LG laptop with a built in camera using Windows Vista Home edition.

Hi all,
A week ago I bought a logitech quickcam fusion. However, after properly installing its software & driver, as soon as I switch to the other account on xp-pro or turn on media player the small video pic in skype/options/video settings turns to bars/lines of various colours yet I can take a clear snap-shot & save it. I've tried updates (currently skype3.5.0.214, logitech quickcam v11.0, ) but it makes no difference. Also in quickcam/ application preferences/ "select video calling application" is stuck on "None Detected" . Imust have repaired, uninstalled & reinstalled at least a dozen time but keeep losing the clear picture in skype/options. I am starting to become a little cynical with the whole affair; could logitech be somehow behind this to encourage webcam users to use logitech videocall in lieu of skype video or has skype not got its latest skype version working properly?
I have a gigabyte motherboard (also updated the realtek audio driver to latest to overcome an audio issue), a P4 3.2Gh, 2G Ram, Win XP Pro. Everthing seems to work properly except the video screen for skype. The bitdefender internet security V10 shows no probs with deep scan. Not only is the usb disconnected when installing software for logitech but virus-protection, spyware, spamware are all disabled as requested by logitech.
Since this is a skype forum, do we actually get a skype tech checking this forum to provide a effective solution. Or can I be asked for info that will help me and possibly others to arrive at a solution? I usually find solutions for myself, however, this has turned out to be above my abilities; so I apolagise for having to bother this forum.

kindest regards
Jamie Watson
Have you tried uninstalling only the QuickCam application software to see if that helps?

Also, one model of the QuickCam fusion is UVC compatible (but one is not). You could also try to load the UVC (Microsoft generic USB Video Device) drivers, if yours isn't compatible with them they won't show up in the driver selection list; or if you can find the USB PID for the camera, I can tell you if it is UVC compatible. It would be interesting to know if using the generic drivers would fix this problem.
