is it possible for someone to compromise my computer via skype? i mean, can they get into my computer by buffer overflow attack, packet injection or some other attack, or can they upload/install virus, trojan or spyware on to my computer?

also, if someone captures the data stream from a pc to pc skype call, how long will it take them to decrypt skype's encryption? For example if they captured my entire call, and they tried to decrypt a small amount of data, say 12kb of data, how long will it be before they can decrypt it, and could they use that to decrypt the rest of the conversation conversation?

*edit*
and if a pc is infected with a worm/virus/trojan/spyware/etc. that is targeting skype, could it be passed to other skype uses?

i'm just curious to know how safe skype is and how private my conversations will be.

No, unless you download an .exe that comtains a virus and sent to you via Skype.
Never accept a file of people you don't know or can't trust.

that's good. but how about if someone is packet sniffing, could they save part of the stream and decode it? And how about if they try to modify packets sent or received, could they execute any kind of code or exploit?

come to think of it, is it only pc-pc calls that are encrypted, or is it also pc 2 phone that is encrypted?

PC to PSTN is encrypted as far as the (local) breakout point, then its not encrypted, same from PSTN to PC, its encryption starts as soon as it hits the internet connection.

Of course it is. But there currently aren't a lot of exploits out there. I have seen some basic Skype password cracking tools, and for sure the Skype spammers must have some sort of hacked client etc. But I've never heard of any remote attacks which exploit Skype itself yet.... and let's hope it stays that way!
