I also just tried 1.4 on Ubuntu 7.04... Well nice that it installs easy, but I did not find any other better thing or did not experience better sound as I already have a good connection.
I was only hugely missing groups. I have organized a lot of contacts in different groups, so after 1 day of using I already switch back to 1.3 also easy to install and I use it without much problems for at least a year already. Once in a while a skype restart needed, for the rest in my opinion better than 1.4
Thanks for all the good work and as 1.4 is a beta release I hope to see at least groups and buttons back in the final 1.4 release!!!

I think we are missing User pictures too.
I think the approach for expand/collapse contacts should be: click to expand, click to collapse (do not use ctrl). I would also like if there is an option to disable expanding at all...

Hi,
I am especially missing the sending of SMS text messages. I was VERY disappointed that this function has still not been added to the linux version.
You can make money with this function guys!
Thanks

You can send sms using a simple command line script from
this post.
We have sms sending in internal builds now, too. Even though it severely lacks any UI, it works, and you probably will see it in public builds a bit later.

User picture is:
http://www.skype.com/help/guides/picture.htmlWhat i hate most on new Skype 1.4 (other stuff are just feature) is:
In 1.3, when somebody messaged you, yellow exclamation mark blinked on you in panel. It's a red flag now, but it doesn't matter. What matters is, that you can't click that flag and open latest chat window directly. You have to right click -> Unread chats and open new window.
One more point is that there is no sign of new message from new user in main skype window...

User picture: open profile editor and set your picture to whatever picture you want. Don't see a problem here.
> What matters is, that you can't click that flag and open latest chat window directly.
This was not possible in 1.3 neither, what's the point here?
> One more point is that there is no sign of new message from new user in main skype window...
Don't understand this one.

I just now updated to 1.4 from 1.3 on Ubuntu Feisty. I must admit that the change in interface really is not to my liking. If you aren't already very familiar with skype, I think you would be completely lost. I use Skype all the time and I found it very hard to figure out what it is doing. The interface is very different from the Windows interface making it hard for people to switch back and forth. I don't see what was the major problem with the 1.3 interface? At the very least, it would be nice to be able to check an option and get back the old interface.
Some comments:
1) When I click on a contact, below the name there is this empty white box. For one of my contacts it has some random text, but for the others it is blank. I imagine you can set this in your profile, but there is no way to edit my profile that I can find in this interface. Also, for SkypeOut contacts, this white box makes no sense. --- I stand corrected - I just figured out how to edit my profile, but what an obscure way to implement it (click on your username and then click on edit profile in new section of window that opens up)! I just happened upon it by randomly clicking on every part of the window. And it still isn't quite clear what this white box is.
2) There is this red flag to the upper right of the main window. This appears to show and hide the call history window, but a red flag suggests a problem and shouldn't be used. Also, when I hit the flag, the icon in the status bar also changes to a red flag, but I am not sure why? I have to reset my status to online to get rid of the flag.
3) A lot of people have trouble figuring out how to change the fontsize of Skype. This should be an added option. Until then, fontsize can be changed by installing the qt4-qtconfig package and running qtconfig-qt4.
4) Video, video, video, when will we have video????

Editing your profile by clicking your Skype name then edit profile is roughly the same as editing your profile in the Windows version, so I can't see any problems with that.

I rather like the new interface. Much less clunky/ugly than the 1.3 interface. I hope they keep the new interface.
The red flag is an event you missed like maybe someone tried to call you or something. You can mark it read and the symbol changes to a clock and the tray symbol changes back to the Sype logo.
I can see why you'd want font size changes, I have no trouble with that now. I do need text color changes though or to get it to change the font color to match KDE for the chat text. Of course I want video as well.

I like the new interface.
Think it's quite logic to click on the thing you want to change.
Maby the add button down left should be bigger.
Also the editbox showing when clicking on someone is
quite unclear. It is a quickmessage to all your known
contacts. Maby a tooltip would be enough.
And yes, when clicking on an event (or right click) in
the tray an option to open chat or call directly would
be good. (haven't checkt if there already is thou).
Groups is also needed.
Some more customizations for the user is good,
icon-sizes, positions, indentations, maby fonts.
but that will probably come.
Minimize on startup is important to. And please let
API MINIMIZE close buddylist not minimize it or
atleast get another API for it.
Good work

To be honest - the 1.4. is a huge disappointment for me. It doesn't look good, some functions are missing (like groups), still no video and SMS support. Compared to the newest Beta I downloaded for my Win OS, Skype for Linux is still weak. And I hoped 1.4 will be much better, but I'd rather switch back to 1.3
Cheers,
Suzu

Has anyone figured out how to work with this new "Find" in the chat history window?
How do you skip from one search result to the next? or previous?
If this doesn't work than this is yet another critical feature which needs to be fixed / brought back.

Stuff that is Missing /removed and noticed immediately...please bring it back
* Exporting chat history to html (browser)
reason:
Search is much better in html / browser verssion.
The search history is far to slow in skype's new "built-in" history function, for larger history
it takes ages , and search is to slow and difficult.
An "hour-glass" could be practical when waiting... .

Andypoo thanks for the quick responce, however...
it aint workin or i aint doin it right ;-)
btw...is there a projected release date for the next release?
i aslo agree with the html history, it allows not only for faster chat and better formating but the ability to print to pdf and such.
