Being new to Ubuntu I was lucky not to screw up the /etc/apt/sources.list file:

A safer option is to go to the 'system' menu

Open SYSTEM/ADMINISTRATION/SOFTWARE SOURCES

Enter Password

Select 'Third party software' tab

Click on Add

Cut and Paste the complete following line

deb http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/debian/ stable non-free

then close

Now open Terminal APPLICATIONS/ACCESSORIES/TERMINAL

Enter sudo apt-get install skype

It will install Skype and be ready to go under Applications/ Internet/Skype

Hmm, is there already a packaged 1.4, or did you just post into a wrong forum?
