Installing Skype for Linux 1.4 Alpha on Fedora 7 is fairly easy. This guide assumes a default installation of the Fedora 7 system.

1. Open the Add/Remove Software package manager found under the Applications menu.
2. Inside the package manager, select the Search tab, and search for and install the three packages below:

qt4 - 4.2.3-8.fc7.i386 - Qt toolkit
qt4-x11 - 4.2.3-8.fc7.i386 - Qt GUI-related libraries
libsigc++20 - 2.0.17-2.i386 - Typesafe signal framework for C++

3. Once these are installed proceed to download the generic Skype client at:

http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-alpha-generic

4. Expand the package and place the main skype executable under /usr/bin and the sounds directory into /usr/share/skype.

5. To launch skype on login I just simply put Skype as a Startup program with the Sessions manager found under:

System > Preferences > Personal > Sessions

The quality/design on this alpha is really impressive. The install process leaves something to be desired but it is an Alpha we are talking about here. I just want to make sure more people can run this so Skype can get the feedback it needs to keep up the great work.

Hi Rodger,
Thanks for your helpful guide and your feedback! We appreciate it! Just so you know we will be releasing a rpm version very soon, so hopefully this will make the installation process a whole lot easier for you in the future smile.png
