Full Version: Mandrake 10.1 problem with answering call

Hey Guys I developed a problem with Skype (messenger), it worked great in the past, but suddenly I can no longer use the voice communication part, when I do it locks up.

If I try to connect through voice, by clicking on the green telelphone icon (which makes it ring) it tells me that I have a "bad sound device" when I try to answer someone that is trying to ring me it locks up and I can't even type back. I then check Kmix and my alsa mixer and I do not see anything out of the norm or to be wrong or improperly set.

If I go to options>>>port>>>> inside with my other PC that has Mandrake 10.0 installed on it, it says my port # is 59293 and when I check 10.1 it said port 37227. Well I do not know if that makes any difference at all, but I have tried to change and that did not work either.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Skype and nothing seems to work. I can use the instant message on it (if someone does not ring me) and it works OK, but if someone trys to ring me, it tells me I have a "bad sound device", and the call ultimately fails and locks me up.

At this point I am not sure what else I can do, other than doing a complete
reinstall of my enitre Mandrake 10.1 operating system. I can only assume there is some sort of bug that has affected my sound driver that works with Skype, but I am not sure if it's worth going through all that trouble of reinstalling the entire operating system..

Any suggestions?

After it locks up and I close out of Skype, I notice the green check remains in the bottom of my system tray. When I reopen it shows two green skype checks, But if I click on one it does nothing and the other, if I click on it, it opens and closes Skype.

Check that you have nothing else using the sound system and that you have oss emulation on, - remember
skype does not use alsa, it tries to talk to oss.

Shutdown artsd (or the gnome equivelent) for your tests, and try that.If that works, try firing up skype the arts/esd wrapper.

Also some sound cards don't like to be put into full-duplex mode, check that you didn't turn that on since the last time you had it working.

My sound was set under Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) and not Open Sound System (OSS), so I left it on ALSA,

I did notice that Full Duplex was checked, so I unchecked it and that resolved my problem. I was able to click on the green phone activate voice conversation and answer and talk as well.

Thanks for your help, it solved the problem....

I guess it's the "Full Duplex" setting in "KDE Control Center" for the sound daemon (Arts)

From the KDE star on bottom of your screen-Go to: System>>>Configuration>>>Configure your desktop>>>Sound>>>Sound System>>>Click on Hardware tab>>>uncheck full duplex.

Let us know if you resolve you're problem too....
