ok here we go.......

I have a mac osx and my girlfriend just bought a sony viao with windows vista. I have the built in isight and she has the Microsoft lifecamVx-3000. When we talk the conversation will only last from 45 seconds to about 2 and a half minutes until it cuts out and disconnects. Also the audio and video for her is clear but on my end the video is choppy and the audio is hit or miss with every time having static (low static). The interesting part is that when we called the same person at different times it worked perfectly for both of us. Clear video, audio and the call didnt drop. This individual has a pc with windows xp and the built in hp pavillon dv 6000 webcam if that makes a difference....

please i need help i need this to work for me to keep in touch
thank you all for your help.

On what versions of Skype you are on both ends?

Try to make video call to someone else from both computers for example videoecho123 and let me know how it works?

yes we have the most updated for pc and mac. Also we tried calling another person and it worked fine. The only thing i can think of is that it worked for us to each other and to other people when i was at panera bread using the restaurant's free wifi. When i get home all of these problems occur. and if it helps i have the wireless-G broadband router from linksys

and thank you for your help
marchauss
another thing that i have notcied is that i installed skype on my mothers pc which has windows xp and am using an older logitech webcam. This seems to work fine with the two of us not dropping the call and sound works, the only thing is the video is a little slow and i am assuming that it is from the age of the webcam. I hope all this helps to figure out why our 2 computers and not being compatable.
marchauss
last thing..i changed the settings so that i don't have the webcam start automatically....the sound works perfectly and doesnt drop the call but the video still cuts out after about 2 minutes.....

and again thank you for your time

Seems that the problem is in your home network connection/setup then.

how would i fix that then. Also it will work a little better now that i have updated but the biggest problem is that video works but the sound is a little spotty. She can hear me all of the time but i can not hear her about half of the time. Is there anything i can do. Also her webcam style again is Microsoft lifecamVx-3000. and her computer is a sony viao with windows vista.

thank you

marchauss, it's not your network. I've been suffering the same problem that you have: random disconnects with Windows to Macintosh Skype video connections.

Vista and OS X Skype don't seem to like talking with each other. I'm not sure what the problem is. I've tried OS X to OS X, both 2.6 updated clients, and kept connections established for 18+ hours. I've established Vista to XP, both 3.2 updated clients, and kept the connection alive for several hours. Again, not dropped calls. But my Vista to OS X connections are shody at best. Sometimes I have been able to keep the connection alive for 20 minutes or so; the longest for an hour 21, but that was an exception. Most of the time the connection falls apart at 2-8 minutes. And this is all on the same network. So I don't think it's your network.

Same with the weird audio issue. Sometimes I get audio. Sometimes I don't. Again, not the network.

Along with this issue, a trouble ticket that I put in for the Skype video and Vista UAC not playing well have been met with responses similar to what you got with this error. "Check your version." "Check your network." Blah, blah. Makes me feel that there is a glitch in the system and the tech support gives a good runaround without actually looking at the problem.

Hopefully it'll be responded to beyond a cookie cutter response.

We will try to reproduce it.

We have not managed to reproduce it.

We have made some 9 hour calls from Windows Vista machine to iBook G4.

So log files from the instance when it happened would be good.

did you make all three calls with same person?

On last 2 reports you have very high packet loss, which can cause calls dropping, jitter etc.

What internet connection is on both sides?

all three calls were with the same person. Also the internet connection is wireless for both sides. The thing about these calls is that it only cuts out when video is opened, it will last for a while almost 30 minutes at a time with only audio. One last thing is that this problem has occured with both of our computers when we have gone to at least 3 separate wireless connections each.

thank you for your time.

Are you using free public Wifi networks?

Can you do a connection speed test on some site and report the results back.

how do you do that?

Hi..

i use skype video [for mac] with my in-laws who use PC and with my friend who uses mac..

i was wondering why with my in-laws the picture is quite pixelated and choppy, while my friend [who is on the other side of the world] comes through very clearly and without noticeable lag?

as far as i can tell, both webcams have the same resolution [640x480]..

what could be causing this discrepancy?

thankyou
t23
Raul Liive
The reason for bad quality can be:
* Slow computer
* Bad/slow internet connection
tangent23
thanks for your reply..

i'm assuming it's my in-laws that would be slow
, as i have no trouble with my friend?

both our connections are reasonably fast..

I have the exact same issue with calling my girlfriend PC to MAC. We both have the latest Skype versions, well-functioning, high-speed, private internet connections at home. The call initiates perfectly, the video starts up, the quality is great for a while, and then, every single time, within 2-5 minutes, the video freezes, the audio goes out, and the call is dropped. It is quite frustrating! Anyone found a good solution yet?

Marchauss was talking about changing a setting so that video does not start automatically with the call, but instead the call only uses audio. These audio-only calls last much longer apparently, but it sounds like they too cut out after 30 minutes or more?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Has anybody found any other related discussion on the forum? Perhaps if enough people are having the same MAC to PC dropped call issue, we can consolidate everyone into one forum discussion and bring it to the attention of Skype so they can justify putting more resources into solving the problem for all of us frustrated customers.
AMTMD83
Something to consider! It may not be a mac to pc issue at all. It may be a CPU issue with one of the computers. Consider this posting and try reducing the number of USB devices you may be using - i.e. make sure you have a headset (mic+headphone) that goes straight into the computer mic/headphone jacks instead of using the microphone on your camera which may work through a USB connection, as this mic uses a lot of CPU. The headset microphone may not use as much CPU, since it is not connected via USB, but instead directly to the soundcard...

Also, macs generally have built-in cameras and microphones, right?

Prior to purchasing a Mac, my husband and I were able to maintain very good video and audio connections with our families who also own PCs. A couple months ago we purchased a Mac and have had problems with the video/audio connections ever since. After reading each of the users inputs in this forum, it appears that there is definitely an issue with the Mac/PC connection. We have different problems every time we sign on to Skype with our families. No audio or no video or both. Always choppy, delayed, and freeze frame videos along with stuttering, delayed audio (or loss). This is the only video program that we have found where we could even get a PC/Mac video connection and hope that Skype can solve this problem. We have a newborn and live far away from our families and rely on this mode of communication!

I read the comment on USB devices possibly being a problem, but our computer does not have any USB cables connected to it. We have not found any solutions and hope that Skype support can help!! Thanks and I am glad to hear that it is not only us having problems with the Mac/PC connection.

Ok I have had the same problem but the kicker is it ONLY happened in the last 3 weeks in other words only when the latest version of Skype appeared. I've been doing webcams with my kids for over 3 months now as they live in the UK (i'm in the US) in the last 3 weeks though the same problem people are talking about here occurs. Things I kn ow from my own trouble shooting:

1) It's NOT a network issue on either side. Either participant can make long video calls to people in their repective countries i.e. UK to UK, US to US. I've done SF to LA, SF to New York. This ONLY happens when we try to conenct to each other UK to US

2) It's ONLY happened since the new version of skype previous version there were no problems

3) Network connection type wired/wireless is not an issue

4) USB items are not an issue, I've used multiple macs some with external camera some with internal iSight and the same issue occurs with EVER one with the 151 version of Skype

So here are the symptoms:

1) Call connects takes a while but video establishes
2) 30 seconds in both sides lose video for a few seconds
3) Connection re-establishes then approx 1 minute later call is dropped

Also just so there are no questions about my network

Conenctions speeds are

8858 kbps dowload
1150 kbps upload

So fine there and that was tested over my wireless network!
