I noticed some time ago that when linking to the Linux download page from the English version, the Debian package (version 1.3 xx) is available for a direct download: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/

When accessing the equivalent page in Italian, the package is missing.
Check by yourself here: http://www.skype.com/intl/it/download/skype/linux/

Interestingly, the english version of the deb package offers, among many others, also the option to choose Italian as the main language.

Of course, the right way to install Skype on a Debian-based distro would be through the deb repositories however, I hope this helps somebody like me that got confused in the beginning.
