First off I’d like to congratulate the Skype development team on a job well done. Sound quality is excellent going computer to computer. I find it better than most cell phone conversations I’ve had. I haven’t yet tried computer to POTS phone, but hear that it too is excellent.
One recurring theme I see is the lack of ability to transfer contact information from machine to machine. I’ve searched the forums and have been unable to locate a topic where this would better fit or that mentions this particular proposed solution. As I have no knowledge of the inner working of Skype, I don’t know if this is feasible or not, but, it appears like it would be.
I read that Skype allows one to be logged in at multiple locations at the same time. When a call comes in, all clients are rung and any client can answer the call. It seems that something like this could be used to maintain a common contact list among multiple clients.
A newly started client could check to see if there were any other clients running under the same Skype username. If there were, it could request a list of the contacts from that client. New entries could be added and existing ones could be modified. I don’t know how Skype deals with deleted contacts. This would require that they be kept track of and marked as deleted. Timestamps for each contact entry could be used to avoid replacing new information with old.
Selectable options could be added to control the exact behavior of this implementation. “Always update contact info”, “Never update contact info”, “Ask about..”, “Always share contact info”, “Never share contact info” and any other combinations that may be needed.
If this has been proposed before, I was unable to locate it. If this should have been placed under some other topic, please feel free to move it there. I’d be interested in input from members of the development team on what I’m missing.

In my opinion this has not been proposed before the way you are suggesting to implement it, but the forum proposals are growing so fast that nobody can follow!
Anyway, if all proposals have to be implemented, Skype Staff should be ten times bigger.
They should post a "global" poll to all their users (also those not active on the forum). In my opinion Web Cam and Answering Machine would be 1 and 2. Contact List transfer feature will probably be in the top ten also.
But I am trying to look in a Crystal Ball now ... :?:

Hey djmcc1951!
Transferring contact names is a bit of a pain I agree. I use a USN Jump Drive, but still it is a hassel.
Something interesting happened to Bimbobo and I lately. I haven't tested it further but maybe you can. I have two different versions of Skype running on two different machines both with the same user name. MadRaven authorized me, so he appeared on machine "A". Today, I was on machine "B". I was lazy. So instead of transferring my contacts list, I just asked MadRaven to Authorize me again. Well in thirty minutes there was MadRaven in my list. I sent him an IM thanking him. He denied doing it.
So maybe there is a new feature in Skype.
Try it.
Regards,
Bill

i was told by skype staff that once a ontact had been approved by a user, he or she can add them to multiple machines and would need no further approval, but intestingly they still show up as unauthorised until they loginnext while your on that machine....?
just my 2 cents

If this feature is really there it would be really great.
One thing I do not understand though.
Where is this info stored whether or not you have authorized a person?

I did not look at your Nationality, but when I saw your "life philosophy" i thought "this is an Australian"! I know another Australian (since 1981) with the same life philosophy!
Back to the topic ...
Interesting the story of Bill and Bimbolo, and yes ... if this is true (no Bill, I don't think you are lying!) ... I think it could be interesting for Skype Staff to give a
small word of explanation, because like Mad Raven, i don't understand!

Salve, guys !
I had a similar experience, just to put my1/2 cent in here:
I have two PCs running the same version, but different usernames.
I authorized each other, and I can talk. Once - for testing - I removed on both computer each others account. after I added them back I also had to ask for authorization, but this request never showed up on the other machine, I was just granted, as if it was stored on the other machine !
greetz,
Felix.

Salve Fesche
Yes you're right, probably it is stored on the other machine! (stupid ... I did not think about it! :? )
Therefore ... only part of the problem solved of course: each time you run Skype on another computer with the same accountname you still have to "carry" the different usernames with you!
Anyway ... very interesting this experience of Bimbolo, Bill and yourself!

I've just got it confirmed! It is a feature that was with us for a long time.
It is stored on the authorization giver's computer. That is why both need to be online to work.

Hey Felix "Fesche",
Our friend Marty Evans "cre8web" has a Macintosh
QUOTE
i did post this in the osx forum
, I don't remember what you have ...
The problem of Marty is perhaps related to some bug in the Mac version of Skype!
He asked me some minutes ago to be in his contact list, I accepted, I see his name in my contact list ... but it seems he is NOT on-line! Strange!
