Full Version: " Problem with sound device" message under Ubuntu feisty
Skype Community > English > Skype for Linux

Hi,
I am a regular Skype user. I started under WinXP (Asus MB with HDA-Intel on-board sound card).
When I moved to linux Kubuntu Edgy (2.6.17) I had a rough time configuring Skype (1.3.0.53_API) and the different sound drivers and controllers. But I got Skype to work perfectly fine, including while playing music.

I recently upgraded to Kubuntu Feisty (2.6.20). Skype does work, except that when trying to connect (or playing the pre-loaded sounds under Tools--Sounds) it outputs the "Problem with sound device" message. All tricks I had to try to have Skype run under Edgy have failed so far.

I incidentally ran on a faq entry on skype.com that recommends to remove the libc6-i686 lib package... which may have a LOT of consequences, such as removing some basic OS utilities.

Is there anything to be done (modifying some conf file I have not found...)? Will the next 1.4 version overcome the issue (and possibly when)?

Thank you!

PS: this issue is different from a earlier post on Skype crashing Ubuntu Feisty. I do not claim the issue is independent from my configuration but I have not found the hide.

I am having a similar problem -- I can hear others, but they cannot hear me. (Kubuntu Feisty). When I call Skype Test Call, I can hear the recording, but my message is not played back to me.

I am running Skype 1.3.0.53_API.

(My system is an Asus G1 -- technical specs are available here: http://www.moqa.com/blog/?p=42 )

Thanks.

Can you post the link to this FAQ entry? Sounds pretty impossible to me.

Hi Obotor,
I had the same problem and I've just fixed it by doing everything at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2444763 which included resetting my sound card.
I hope this works for you.

Hi all!
I could not find the link I mentioned any more (berkus).
The instructions from the Ubuntu forum meant a lot of hassle since the simpler steps did not work and I did not want to screw all the sound config I had a hard time setting up (did I mention I have an integrated HDA Intel card?) (foghorn).
So I waited...
Until this week!
A brand new package is output, especially for Ubuntu 7.04 (2.6.20 kernel).
Everything OK at first startup.
So everything is up and running!
Cheers!
