Skype shuts down my computer on a regular basis (4 times today).
It's always associated with the video connection. If I have video set to start automatically when a call is connected, as the call is connected I get a brief audio reiteration then the computer restarts.
If I uncheck the video autoconnect option, I can place a call normally. Usually, when I click on Start Video, the same shutdown symptoms occur.
If I unplug the Intel CS630 camera everything works fine.
Sometimes I'm able to make a video call with no problems, though this is rare.
This has worked fine in the past so not sure what has changed other than accepting regular updates to Skype.
I tried uninstalling to install an old version of Skype. It wouldn't let me as the Skype.msi file could not be found. I tried installing a Skype.msi but couldn't find one.
Given that I couldn't fully uninstall Skype 3.5, I tried installing Skype 2.0 over the top of it. Superficially it worked OK, but the same error occurred with video.
I've now installed Skype 3.6 and deleted the old Skype folder from %appsdata% - the same problem occurred.
My computer is 6 months old, dual core, Windows XP.
My suspicion is that somehow the connection of video is throwing the computer into a loop which sets in motion the computer autoprotect mechanism (CPU overheat mentioned on one chat forum I found). I can't supply any data to confirm this other than the audio iteration shortly before shutdown.
I attempted to attached the latest minidump from the crash with Skype 3.6 but the file extension couldn't be uploaded. Changing the file extension didn't help unfortunately. I can email it to you.
Expert help would be most gratefully received.
Thanks
Geof
Hi Geof,
As from what I read this is issue only occurs when you're trying to use video during calls. I would like to ask you to try the following:
1. Install the latest version of Skype from
http://www.skype.com/go/download2. Make sure you have the latest audio, video and webcam drivers installed. If not please install them.
If this is still no joy then please write back so I can give you further details how to enable Skype logging and how you can send them to me, so I can forward to staff.
Regards,
