Hello,

My fiance and I depend on Skype to keep us connected while he is over seas. Recently, however, when I make a call, either to a land line or a computer, as soon as the other end picks up, my computer shuts down and restarts automatically.

I have tried to uninstall the program, updated, changed to the beta one and still no difference. All else seems to work well inside and outside the program until I place a call.

Does anyone know what is going on and if there is any suggestions on how to fix this! We have used Skype for two years and found it a godsend! We really miss it and would like very much to get this working again.

Thanks in advance.

First do below:
Exit Skype
Start
Run
Type: %appdata%
delete folder "Skype".
Re-run Skype and log in with your data.

Note:
You will need your password to re-log on, and re-set any options from default

If no joy, check sound card drivers are fully up to date

Hi! I have had your same problem. It emerged when I bought a logitech webcam. I solved it by updating the camera software. It does not shout down any more, but it is still not perfect, but I think it depends on the fact that my laptop is already 6 years old and probably it's not powerful enough to cope with the video and skype together.
Hope this helps

Skype shuts down my computer on a regular basis (4 times today).
It's always associated with the video connection. If I have video set to start automatically when a call is connected, as the call is connected I get a brief audio reiteration then the computer restarts.
If I uncheck the video autoconnect option, I can place a call normally. Usually, when I click on Start Video, the same shutdown symptoms occur.
If I unplug the Intel CS630 camera everything works fine.
Sometimes I'm able to make a video call with no problems, though this is rare.
This has worked fine in the past so not sure what has changed other than accepting regular updates to Skype.
I tried uninstalling to install an old version of Skype. It wouldn't let me as the Skype.msi file could not be found. I tried installing a Skype.msi but couldn't find one.
Given that I couldn't fully uninstall Skype 3.5, I tried installing Skype 2.0 over the top of it. Superficially it worked OK, but the same error occurred with video.
I've now installed Skype 3.6 and deleted the old Skype folder from %appsdata% - the same problem occurred.
My computer is 6 months old, dual core, Windows XP.
My suspicion is that somehow the connection of video is throwing the computer into a loop which sets in motion the computer autoprotect mechanism (CPU overheat mentioned on one chat forum I found). I can't supply any data to confirm this other than the audio iteration shortly before shutdown.

I attempted to attached the latest minidump from the crash with Skype 3.6 but the file extension couldn't be uploaded. Changing the file extension didn't help unfortunately. I can email it to you.

Expert help would be most gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi Geof,

As from what I read this is issue only occurs when you're trying to use video during calls. I would like to ask you to try the following:
1. Install the latest version of Skype from http://www.skype.com/go/download
2. Make sure you have the latest audio, video and webcam drivers installed. If not please install them.

If this is still no joy then please write back so I can give you further details how to enable Skype logging and how you can send them to me, so I can forward to staff.

I have the same problem on two computers. One is an older Fujitsu Siemens laptop (my father's) the other is a brand new China made Founder laptop I just bought for my fiance in Shanghai. It is enough to run Skype, no need for even to start a video call (or a call, as far as I can see). Both computers are updated with all the updates I can find. No help. So I would really like to get some help with debugging. I am a software engineer, so I should be able to do most of it - except that the computer I have physical access to speaks only Chinese. But, no matter, I can try. This is a really annoying problem and only Skype has it. So I wonder if this is really a driver issue, or some misunderstanding/not applying common workarounds in Skype code. I do not mean to accuse anybody of anything, I just think we should keep an open mind until we have proof of the culprit.

Could you please contact me? Over Skype or e-mail. My father hates me right now, because he thinks that Skype (which I have told him to use) broke his computer... And he can be mean when he wants to be. :)
