Skype for windows beta 3.2.0.82 gives a strange desktop icon. Never happened before. Caused by the new installer?
Raul Liive
What version of windows are you using?

It works here fine on XP.
lukman_chowdhury
looks like somehow the icon image has changed.

you can get the old one back if you want. delete this shortcut, then go to start>program files>skype

right click on the skype program icon

choose "send to"

and send to "desktop (create shortcut)"

is this happening to all your desktop shortcuts or just the skype one?

Win XP pro with all updates except IE7. It only happens to one of the computer. I tried the other one and it is fine. I tried uninstall, reboot, and reinstall, still same wrong icon.

It only happens to the Skype desktop icon. After the strange Skype icon, I installed Google Picasa2 and it gives a correct icon. I will try your method. Thanks.

the properties of the icons of 3.1 and 3.2beta are different. 3.1 allows to change icon while 3.2beta does not.
Raul Liive
Yes they are different due to installer changes.

This is what I did,
  • Quit Skype
  • Find Skype.exe (default location is "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\")
  • Right-click Skype.exe and select "Create Shortcut"
  • Drag the new "Shortcut to Skype.exe" icon to the desktop
  • Test it by double-clicking to start Skype
  • Delete the old Skype icon from the desktop
  • Rename the new "Shortcut to Skype.exe" to "Skype"

As Raul suggests, the MSI installer creates application icons which don't have the same properties as regular shortcut icons. It also cleared out the Skype program folder during installation, so it wiped multiple versions of Skype from my system - but that's another story. wink.png

This method does not work because the icon in the Start>program files>skype is the same wrong icon.

This method does work but its property is like the old 3.1 icon. The wrong icon works fine, just not displaying the skype.png . I guess I should try some other MSInstallers to see if it is specific to Skype.

Skype reset

Warning you must remember your Skype username and password before you do this otherwise you will not be able to log in when you restart Skype because the link to your username and password details will be lost when you delete config.xml and all options are reset to default. You are also advised to backup your contacts list by going to the Main Skype window>…….contacts>…….advanced>……..Backup contacts to file. This will save a yourskypeusername.vcf file to a location on your PC of your choice.

First logoff Skype and shut it down.

Start
Run
Type: %appdata%
Now look for the Skype folder and delete that folder.
Re-run Skype and log in with your data.

This method did not work. What is the difference between this method from uninstalling-rebooting-reinstalling? Someone earlier said uninstalling of 3.2 beta which uses MSinstaller will clean the skype folder. Thanks for the advice.

OK. Finally, I searched all files and folders with skype name and delete them all. Then reinstall. The correct icon is back. I guess the icon file was corrupted somehow. The problem is that I could not find which file does the desktop icon pointed to and made the fix difficult. Thanks for suggestions.

It came back again after restart the computer. Did the same thing and can not solve the problem. But the icon works as expected. I will not care about the looking and just wait for the final release.

I had the same problem. I stumbled across this registry fix and it solved it for me in XP:

I am runing WinXP SP2 with all the latest updates, except IE7 (I use Firefox) and I just upgraded from Skype 3.1.0.144 to Skype 3.2.0.163, because I was having that annoying problem where only Skype closes when you try to Shutdown. I had the same problem described in this thread. My Desktop and Start Menu shortcut icons for Skype were showing as the Windows default icon:

[attachmentid=10466]

Funnily enough, I also had a problem with the icons in my User Accounts Control Panel. They were shown as the red X that IE uses when it can find an image. I'd noticed this from the day I bought my computer, but didn't bother doing anything about it because it wasn't a big issue. Anyway, I installed the registry fix from the link above, and it fixed both problems. Both my Skype and User Accounts icons are now shown correctly.

Thanks Matt K. I don't know how or why you put the two issues together, but nice one.

I just wanted to say thank you. I had the same problem as many others regarding the wrong icons installing when Skype was installed. I did what you suggested on the desktop icon and the icon in Start-All Programs-Skype and it worked perfectly in both places. I now have the blue icon in both places. There is a green on in my taskbar which I assume is the correct one for the taskbar.

I really appreciated your help. I've been racking my brain trying to figure this out and after reading your message it turned out to be a simple fix.

Thank you again.
