Full Version: Skype crashes badly in Ubuntu Feisty with WiFi
Skype Community > English > Skype for Linux
Gran Maestro
Hi there everybody.

As for subject I gave the latest Ubuntu Beta a spin and found that even Skype works like a charm, better than ever, as long as I use cable connection.

If I load the rtl WiFi card module (blacklisted btw), everything keeps working perfectly well, but Skype.
When I start Skype, as soon as it loads my buddy list, it crashes freezing solid.

I have to hard reboot the system.

I would like to produce a crash log to further investigate the reason as the culprit might be a buggy rtl 8180 driver.

See the relevant launchpad entries https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/l...6.20/+bug/78255
and https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/module...ools/+bug/88430

It's a shame as both Feisty and Skype worked better than ever, only the rtl module seems to create the problem which affects Skype.

I tried strace skype but that didn't help much.

Any ideas?

Note to Ryan and the developers: keep on the great work!

/Pieter

EDIT: just for the ref, please note that the crash can be reproduced any time however, switching over to cable connection, without any further changes makes Skype usable again. Any clues, anybody?

Same problem here. Works beautifully via ethernet - but it does seem to have an issue with wifi.. however I am a Ubuntu noob, so it might just be me..

droop, I am no newbie and I am willing to investigate the issue however, the lack of support for Skype on Linux is really discouraging.. sadsmile.png
But why? why? why?

It look's like there is just a bunch of part-time amators working on it.

Make it Open-Source, at least part of it, what's the problem?
There is supposedly a beta 1.4 around. Just release it for testing.
That will certainly be more helpful than just showing screenshots of it.
I really do not understand..

@satya: this is no really helpfull. I want skype on my Linux-box, I know other programs work well (I use Gizmo) why shouldn't Skype?

Gran Maestro: We are here, we are listening. We're not ignoring you. Yes, 1.4 development is continuing, yes, development pace is extremely rapid. I personally have logged 74 hours this week on 1.4 coding. As for a release, it is coming *really* soon. We didn't want to release the client with some obvious functionality from 1.3 missing.

What I can say now is that almost every feature from 1.3 has been improved for 1.4, and the user interface is a lot more friendly and inviting. Feedback on sound issues has been positive, with the biggest issues of 1.3 gone. This release is based on the new audio engine designed in-house and in use on Windows 3.2 and Mac 2.6.

We're really eager to get this release out to you, and whilst it's not completely polished (a few rough edges on the appearance), I'm sure you'll figure us for this in just getting the release out to you to enjoy!

With regards satya4u1, this is nothing more than spam. I mean, come on, he replied to EVERY thread on the forums first 2 pages.

Thanks for hanging in there, I'm still reading and posting. I realise that from a release perspective there seems to be a lack of support, but in every other way this is simply not the case. We're here for you! smile.png

I disagree, the fact that skype is proprietary and even has a linux client shows 99% more commitment than most other companies, especially for something that is probably less than 1% of there total users. As I said, I am a noob, but I am not sure what pieces they could opensource? The sound engine is proprietary etc., it isn't something they can just give away.

Andrew, thanks for replying. I just got home and read your note.

I am looking forward to the upcoming release hoping that "soon" will be really soon this time.. smile.png

@droop, I am surprised you are disagreeing in toto with my proposals.

What I was suggesting was to at least increase the number of testers to speed up the release cycle.
Even Apple is gone successfully "open" on several projects, the "Safari" browser being the most noticeable one of them.
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/index.html

And here to Webkit, the "Open" portion of Safari http://webkit.org/

Open Source has proven to be an extremely successful model, that's why we are benefiting of Linux among many others.

Ciao

hi Andypoo, I believe you work hard and well wink.png

I stopped using Skype almost half year, truly I've very upset before ... what's Skype going on? but now I understand why .

we really need a whole new Skype, if do so, you have spend more time -> that's for quality guarantee, that's why I was upset but I never post any word here until now.

now I'm glad of the message about "it is coming *really* soon." - except for a little question : can you give a DATE ? I just want to know what month, that's enough.

wish you success! sorry, my English's not well~ hope you don't care tongueout.png

by the way, I'm Ubuntu Feisty user, too. It's really a best Linux distro.

Hi there all,

a short update to my initial post on this thread.

I noticed that if I start Skype without WiFi connectivity (just check-out the box on the network preference panel for your WiFi card) and than, I re-enable the WiFi card, everything works fine.

Not very practical but it least it works without freezing the system.

I hope this can give some useful indication also to Andrew and company for further debugging.

Hi everyone,

I'm having the same problem, but the named workaround (disabling the WiFi connection) doesn't work for me. If it helps anyhow, here is the log of the Kernel oops:

Hi everybody.

Just for the records, Skype 1.4 fixes this issue.
And audio quality is vastly superior than previous versions.

Get it here, now!

Certainly worth the long waiting. Great job guys!

Hi everyone,

no, sorry, for me the error stays the same in Skype 1.4.
Holyfive
Hi guys,

for your information: The new alpha version (64) finally gave me a concrete error message (missing symlink from package libqt4-core) instead of crashing immediately. So I was able to fix it. Thanks for your efforts!
