Can anyone tell me how to switch off this feature?

When browsing every telephone number is automatically converted to the skype format for dial out. Not only this, but it cuts off the length of the number so cannot read it.

Ditto that problem here. Until yesterday I had a button that could toggle that feature on and off. You might want to look in your toolbar at the top for it. I wish I could post a picture of it, but like I said, it is gone on my IE now and phone numbers are automatically being changed to call links.

Most likely the button has "slipped off" your IE toolbar. That can happen if you install other toolbars.
Please look into the customize toolbar dialog in IE and you should find a Skype icon there which you can add back.

Nope, the button was not available. The only button there was one that can toggle the Skype toobar visible or invisible.

I have done a little research. What is missing is the button referred to on this page: http://www.skype.com/help/guides/ie_addon/

It appears that I need to reinstall Skype in order to get this button. This page does not offer me the opportunity to add it again. It should!!

That's why it's always smart to have the latest version of Skype
