Beta 3.2 (although I have no idea how previous version behaved) consumes a lot of RAM memory (currently it takes over 67MB on my laptop?. I know that running so many services within Skype requires usage of memory but there should be some limits to that! I really wouldn't like the stable version using 60MB of my RAM, which is even more than firefox uses (for comparison purposes, gizmoproject uses about 24MB RAM).
One more thing: what is SkypePM.exe running in addition to normal Skype.exe?

You can save some RAM by killing "skypePM.exe" from Windows Task Manager. I advise you next time when you upgrade Skype not to update the plugin as well. When it's not updated along with Skype it becomes unusable and "skypePM.exe" process doesn't start any more. For more information about how to disable the Extras Manager installation please view the attached screens (on the second screen instead of "Install Skype (BETA) Extras Manager" you must see "Update Skype (BETA) Extras Manager" or something like that - just uncheck it and no more skypePM.exe)

Thanks for the SkypePM info.
Though memory consumption is still really a problem in Skype. I do hope the dev team is working on reducing the heavy load - especially when Skype is running in background all the time this is highly annoying.
Any idea what the current development status is?

Why don't you
submit a support request and ask them yourself?!
I hope they reply (in the near 1 year

)!
Best of luck!

i did too... i hate it when good programs become bloated because someone decides they need 6000 features which all need to be loaded at startup

Actually I don't like only three features - SkypeFind, Extras Manager and Skype Prime. And I'll tell you why.
- SkypeFind is very easily abused and not everyone uses it because Google exists
- The Extras Manager uses a lot of resources and I think that I have better things to do than playing silly games
- Skype Prime can be used only if the user has a PayPal account and PayPal doesn't support every country (mine it doesn't)

well after last update my skype consumes from 30 to 40 megabytes. Fortunatelly this pesky manager doesn't run any more.
I think such memory consumption is exaggerated, although I don't know what would a reasonable amount be.
I have some comparison to make: my multicommunicator gaim consumes about 15 mB constantly. A similar although simpler multicommunicator TotalCommunicator consumes between 7MB when it's up and 400 kB when its minimized - bit funny but ok I guess.
the difference is significant and not wholly to be attributed to increased usefulness of Gaim.
Can it be that Skype was also disregarding some code neatness?
Just guessing as a non-programmer.
cheers

Skype 3.2 runs fine with a memory use of 5-7 MB. (Without PM installed)
You can use FreeRAM XP software to test it !

Just Skype (without PM running) alone needs 30-60 MB when running. This value is confirmed by a large number of users in various online forums.

Correct yes, if you do nothing. - But if you force it to use only 6-7 MB with the software above, it still running fine and without any problem !.
Well, i think the the max. use i have seen here is about 35 MB when i not use Free-ram prg.

Well, it should work well under default conditions - not with some tweaks.

I haven't had any major memory issues. Skype.exe runs at a nice 20MB when it's idling, lower than MSN and Yahoo, but I am not here to compare between applications.
I think its better to compare between functions of skype. IE- how much memory and processor time is skype using when it is idling, during a chat, during a call, during a conference call (keep in mind that hosting a conference call requires more memory), during a video call, etc...
There is one thing to note. The memory usage after a call has ended remains the same, and it takes nearly 10 minutes for the memory usage to go back down (ie, before call, 20mb, during call 50mb, after the call, still 50mb, about 10-15 minutes later, 20mb). Is this an XP issue or is this something that skype can correct. Firefox does this as well I believe. I'm running a laptop with about 768MB ram and around a 1.66ghz processor.
