Hi; I'd like to ask the Skype team a few questions regarding their own Linux systems that they use in the development phase of the Linux Skype application.

Q1 Hardware:
What hardware is used, Computer, Sound Devices etc..

Q2 OS:
What distro's/version's do they use?

Q3 Software:
X11, Gnome, KDE etc..

Q4 Relevant information
Anything else people should be aware off to get a working Linux Skype running.

Q1 Hardware:

Just a regular lenovo laptop with intel hda audio and intel i945 video.

Q2 OS:

Arch Linux Testing (the very bleeding edge)

Q3 Software:

KDE 3 with mods, http://kdemod.ath.cx

Q4 Relevant information:

There's no hope for Skype 1.3, but the next version will have virtually no special requirements apart from a decently recent (recently decent) ALSA and a few libs installed - libsigc++ 2.0, Qt4 (and libpcre perhaps).

Q1
* Lenovo T60 with onboard audio (hda-intel)

Q2
* Slackware 11 + current, so something like Slackware 12 but reverted X back to 6.9 due to some ATi driver issues with Slackwrae's 7.2 build. This also meant reverted some KDE packages away from slackware-current's KDE packages to some packaged earlier.

Q3
* Currently Xorg 6.9, Qt 4.2.3, KDE 3.5.6, kernel 2.6.20, ALSA 1.0.14rc3

Q4
* Skype 1.4 is going to really rock. 1.3 wasn't as impressive in the end as it should have been (before it went Gold), and we realise this. We wanted to sign off on 1.3 so we could get working on 1.4 as soon as possible, so we did as much as we could (almost all reported bugs outside of audio were fixed before 1.3's release). We started working on 1.4 straight after 1.3 went gold. Had we open-sourced 1.3 or anything like that, there still wouldn't have been anything more the community could have done with these audio issues that we didn't already do working on the client, so it would be nice if people could put that to rest, as it really isn't helping anybody to hear complaints every day. I realise it will be the case until we have released 1.4 to the general public, and we're getting closer. I can't give you a specific time frame yet, as I know I'll be held to ransom, but I will be vague enough to say "within the next few months". That's not to say it will be 3 months, but could be anytime within the next few months smile.png

Goody. I get very tired of packages tailored to run only on Ubuntu wink.png
