Full Version: sound interrupted atfter some idle time

Hello,

I have searched the linux forum and did not find a similar thread which covers my problem. If I have overlooked something, I apologize.

Here is the problem. After beeing logged into Skype for approx. 30 min the sound on outgoing calls, i.e. at both sender and receiver sides, is interrupted and I have to end the phonecall and restart Skype to solve the problem. I am not sure if that is always happen or only if I had made previously a phonecall shortly after login and then leaving the pc idle.

I suspect this is a bug in the ALSA implementation of Skype. I am using version 1.3.0.53_API on Debian 4.0 Etch with ALSA version 1.0.13-4 and kernel 2.6.18-4-686. Skype is the only sound application running, especially I am not using any sound daemons. The onboard soundcard on my IBM X23 laptop does not have a hardware mixer, so dmix is enabled by default.

If anybody has made similar experiences with Skype on Linux I would be very happy to get some feedback.

Hi -- unfortunately, this is a known problem with the 1.3 client. We hope to have this fixed for you in the next major release, but if we can get it fixed with a 1.3 fix, we'll do this as well. At this time, the issue is still open.

Sorry about that,
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

I have switched back to OSS in the Skype audio settings. I hope this will temporarily fix the problem until the next release is out.

Thank you very much for your support,
Alexander

I have the same problem (I thought it was due to swapping) but I remember that previous version (1.2) did not have that problem. Is there an archive of previous releases (publicly available)?

Thanks,

Incidentally, by way of clarification, the sound gets choppy when playing any of the sounds selectable in Tools -> Options -> Sounds.

So obviously the problem is with Skype's interaction with the sound subsystem (whether we use ALSA, OSS, esd or artsd seems immaterial), not with the voice protocol itself.
