Full Version: Error on bootup after installing Skype 3 on 64-bit XP
Skype Community > English > Skype for Windows
Matt D
Hi there,

After installing Skype 3 on my 64-bit XP system, I now get the following error dialog appearing when I login to my machine.

========================
---------------------------
Program Cannot Start or Run
---------------------------
The program or feature "\??\C:\DOCUME~1\matt\LOCALS~1\Temp\13\1.com" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.
========================

I know this error is coming from Skype, because I used ProcExplorer from sysinternals. The error dialog is owned by a process "cmd.exe" which is executed by "SkypePM.exe", which is run by the main Skype process "Skype.exe". (see screenshot attached)

Has anyone seen this problem? This might be one for the Skype Developers??

Thanks in advance,
Matt.

Great that others have also found this and the developers know about it. Has been a little frustrating...

No luck for me with any of the above - including the msi version. The only thing that has worked is reinstalling with v.1.3.0.60. Unfortunate.

Skype reads your BIOS

Talks to your motherboard when your dad is out, too

REPORTS are coming in from eagle-eyed users who have spotted the Voice over IP outfit Skype's software reading their BIOS and motherboard serial number.
Over here, one bloke who runs 64-bit versions of Windows, spotted a strange dialogue box which says "the program or feature "\??\C:\Documents and Settings\Myria\Local Settings\Temp\12\1.com" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows."

In other words your phone is trying to run a .com file, which doesn't work that well in Win64 because there’s no NTVDM.

Thinking that getting an unreadable executable file coming from Skype sounds interesting, he opened the file up to see what it was. It is 46 bytes long and includes the phrase

int main(void)
{ fwrite((const void far*) 0xF0000000, 1, 0xFFFF, stdout);
fwrite((const void far*) 0xF000FFFF, 1, 1, stdout);
return 0;
}

Now, as any fule kno, that is a catchy programming phrase designed to dump your system BIOS, which usually includes your motherboard’s serial number, and send it to the Skype Mothership.

The bloke was unsure what the hell Skype would want that information for. He points out that if it weren't for that pesky Windows 64 not having an NTVDM they would have gotten away with it.

this HAS to be answered. this can't just go by, it's too serious and too damn important. waiting for an official reply why skype needs this info... (please surprise me with a reasonable answer)

Looks like SKYPE steal user's info because there is nothing about that in skype website.
I can confirm that at 100% because i was having exactly the same error on win 2003 x64
Anyway i hope skype will tell us why they steal our private information doh.png
