Skype for Linux version 0.91.0.12 was just released. Get it right off the press from
http://www.skype.com/download_linux.html . Read the release notes for details, but the highlights in this version are:[list] Watermarks and gradient selector in contact list. Looks cool to us, but may eat resources on slower machines - if this is the case, you can disable these from Options/Behaviour.
[*] File transfer! Transfer files seamlessly to/from other Skype for Windows/Linux/Mac users. Fast, secure, easy.
[*] Display technical call info (see Options, Advanced to turn it on).
[*] "View" menu - disable interface elements you do not use to save space and reduce clutter.
[*] "Send contacts" feature - easily share contacts with your other contacts.[list]

Wonderful, Sending contacts and File Transfer were the two things I missed in the Linux version...

After the little language choice problem at the beginning, this version's working fine, and finally has a fix for sorting the call history by it's actual date, rather than alphabetically by day, then day number, then month! Keep up the great work guys, I can't wait until the ALSA version's ready...

After installing 0.91.0.12 the whole application starts with a greek character set (i'm from germany). I think this is a very bad thing ....
But ... Skype is cool.

I am the Gentoo maintainer for skype, and skype here starts and the menus are all full of nice squares. Any ideas why this is happening? I Removed my old settings and it all the same.

We messed up the language selection in this version a bit. Delete shared.xml (you don't need to delete your personal config) and you're good. The squares are chinese characters for which you don't have fonts installed/configured.

A few versions ago I pointed out that some users (like me!) don't have a toolbar, and asked for an option for the toolbar icon to be turned off. It was said at the time that it would be in the next version, but still hasn't appeared. Is this feature still planned?

Since Skype 0.91 for Linux, there have been no menu key shortcuts. Will this essential (to me!) feature be restored, or is there some reason for removing it?

Thanks, "terminus"... removing shared.xml solved the chinese-as-squares GUI problem. Nice watermarks on the widgets.

You can disable toolbar from the View menu in this version.

It will be restored eventually, but it's hard to get it right with the translation system we are currently using (basically reusing the Windows resources which have no accelerator info, so we'll need to put them in through some script which we haven't yet gotten working

).

You can disable toolbar from the View menu in this version.
Sorry, I wasn't clear. I want to be able to turn off the Skype icon that appears in the system toolbar (because I don't have one, so it shows up as an extra window), not turn off the Skype toolbar.

Another bug I reported in earlier versions of Skype which was allegedly going to be fixed "by the next version" was that icon text is not set, so the iconised main Skype window is called "???". Is there some problem fixing this?

Yes, we will have a feature to turn of the tray docking window.
The ??? window title will eventually be fixed. I don't think we made specific version claims.

It would also be nice if you made it more compatible with Gnome.
Gnome starts applications right before it starts gnome-panel, so you create a floating window. Instead you should wait for the notification area to appear.
Look at the code in gaim, and libegg or whatever it is that handle this stuff for gnome apps!

When I installed the Suse rpm my menu turned to Chinese, but thanks to Gilles Gravier, who infomed me to "simply delete $HOME/.Skype/shared.xml and all works fine. The shared.xml file gets recreated. You will need to re-enter SkypeID and password, but your whole contacts list gets preserved." This was easy enough for me to do so I did it and now I am running 0.9.0.12

Well, there is even an easier way to whange the language if you get greek or chinese characters; Look in the menus (even if you don't understand them) and you'll find the languages list! (in the 3rd menu form the left). There you'll be able to change your language. This is how I switched back to french in seconds.

The Gentoo wrapper-script for Skype has sopport for esd and artsd. From my knowledge artsd is working fine (except delay) as long as it accesses alsa "hw:*" devices and not dmixed/dsnooped ones!
aoss does not work with Skype.
If you want best sound quality with Skype, then you should let it use kernel-emulated oss devices...

Just installed 0.92.0.12... Skype didn't tell me about this new version.... but anyway, I'm happy with it. And I found a few bugs already!
- Language support for Dutch is not complete. In the "Options" window, the tabs are in English and in some of the tabs, there's also some Englsih. Same goes for "Show text on toolbar" in the "View" menu.
- In the "Start" window, the text 'Click here to go to your account page' is not transparent, so a part of the background logo is gone.
And then some wishes for later versions:
- in the "Call list", provide information about that specific call, such as duration, costs (for SkypeOut), etc.
- a special "internet cafe" version would come handy. This should not have a contact list and not show the account balance.... or make those features optional, with password! Or a master skype client, that can monitor the activity of those clients.
For the rest: I LOVE SKYPE!!!!!

For your wishes, the first will certainly come at some time, as it's already there in Windows version, an features in one version get implemented in the others as well (just with some delay)
For the second, maybe it will take longer to arrive!
