Full Version: Yet another sound device question

I'm using Skype 1.3.0.53 on Kubuntu Edgy. Initially I was running with just a Soundblaster Audigy 4 and everything worked well (using ALSA).

Now I want to put back in my motherboard's NF4 sound device and use that for Skype only, while keeping the Audigy for all other sound tasks.

In Skype, if I select ALSA then it doesn't matter which device I choose for output - the sound always comes out of the Audigy (which is the default card on the system).

If I select OSS, then I can select the nVidia device and I get all the Skype sounds but no actual voice during a call.

From my understanding, ALSA is preferred, so I'd like to figure out how to make Skype respect the choice of device. Can anyone help?

so you want to use one soundcard for skype and another for everything else? i'm not sure if that'll work.
you can make alsa use a soundcard and select apps to use alsa as the output. but you can't make alsa use two soundcards.

it could be possible that oss is set to your other soundcard, but imho forget oss. it's obsolete and was never good anyways.

Why not? People manage to use things like USB phones and USB teleboxes and they are just USB sound input and output devices. And as far as I know they don't end up with all their sound coming out of the USB phone. Skype offers the ability to select the sound device - why would they offer it if it wasn't intended to work?

I have a double soundcard setup. One for Skype and the other for everything else. Just use ALSA for both.

Good to know that it should work. So in Skype I go to "Options" -> "Sound Devices". I select "ALSA - 2 devices found". Then I select for all three options (In, Out, Ringing) the NVidia CK804 card.

But still all sound comes out of my main speakers connected to the Audigy. What am I doing wrong?

I seem to have made it work by disabling the KDE sound system and seleting OSS. I'm sure there's a better solution, but until someone comes back with one, that worked for me.
