Full Version: Skype freezes Ubuntu?
Skype Community > English > Linux

The first message I get from a skype user will cause my machine to be frozen & unresponsive for ~90 seconds (it's how I know I'm getting a new message now).

I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 on a Thinkpad T43 with a 1.8ghz intel processor and 1.5GB ram.

Any ideas?

for a start you could try muteing all sounds in the tools -> options -> sounds menu. It sounds like either drawing the window or playing the alret sound is not working to well

I can also confirm this. This only seem to happen when Skype has been idling for a while. I am wondering if this is harmful to the computer in any way? Especially to my disks. What if i have some torrents running and i get this soft lockup? Can it corrupt my data or is it harmless?

It's a GUI error, it happens to any machine regardless, it also happens on mine. Apparently the GUI sucks up so much power on a single machine. It's just as bad as running a game and Windows Live Messenger at once (dual monitor or not). Apparently, it could be the QT windows were not created properly or something because my X server keeps reporting more than 50% of CPU usage when using the text feature on Skype.
