Although the libasound.so.2 is in /usr/lib , the skype still reports Libasound.so.2 no such file or directory
Any help?

you must install ALSA into your computer for Skype to use the ALSA sound server.

So if the libalsasound is in the /usr/lib, that does not mean that Alsa is installed?

nope, that means that it is installed.
you need libasound.so.2 for ALSA and Skype (using ALSA) to work.

I have alsa installed (1.0.20) and I still get this error. 64 bit 9.04 Ubuntu. The file is most certainly there. In usr/lib i've got libasound.so.2 which is a link to a shared library that appears right underneath it, libasound.so.2.0.0
I'm no computer whiz, but I have fixed everything else I have wanted to on my lappy with help from the great online community, including sound, video, plugins for firefox and running things in wine, but I'm stumped by this, it seems like it is right there.
Any thoughts?

Did you install the "64 bit" .deb version (which should have the /usr/lib32/ dependencies that skype needs as perhaps the last 32bit-only app)?
