Hi,
I've got a theory 'bout that. I suppose Skype is made for doin' calls and text-chats are only a feature. Skype earns money with calls - not with text-chats. So i think they didn't do that to maintain calls attractive.
But I agree on all counts. It should be integrated and I could imagine enableing webcam while text-chats would bring a lot of more Skype users!
If you call with a webcam, you neccesarlily need ot cal lTO another computer for the person to see the webcam (weather or not he/she has a webcam too)
Wich means web-cam calls are only a feature for PC-to-PC calling wich skype ALWAYS have offered for free... so they earn no more, nor less money with only having webcams in only "PC-to-PC calls" No more money than they would have had in a text-based chat.
Ofcourse what skype earns money through is the PC-to-Phone or Phone-to-PC calls, but in those there is no use of webcam afte all. Webcam is only a functionality with the *free* calls. So why can't it likewise work with the *free* chat too? -As is it does not promote the paid calls in any way, and skype got everything to gain by means of numbers of new users by addinf webcam functionality to the chat.
So again. Why not? They don't earn money by the webcams as is, so it is no economical loss adding it to the chats either, since it onsly woks in the FREE PC-to-PC calls. Likewise it is everything to gain in happy excited users, and as pointed out, MORE new users that might be tempted to try calling whne they get skype in the first place, even if they might have downloaded it for chat/webcam?
As far as I nkow there is no technical obstacles in the way for it either.
So since the webcams have no function for paid services, and there seem to be no technical or programming obstacle, I repeat:
Why not?
