Full Version: Macally IceCam systematically crashes skype 2.0.03

I haven't found any documentation yet, so here it goes, if it can be usefull to the developper team:

Under MacOS X 10.4.8 (and 10.4) on a Pismo Powerbook G3, Macally IceCam (with version 1 and 2 drivers) systematically crashes skype when:
- I open the preferences panel and try to get a video preview from the icecm (recognized as "camera")
- when I try to activate the icecam in a conversation

Otherwise video reception is fine as audio. Before skype crashes, I can see the icecam green led shut off, sometimes come back and then shut again. The IceCam works fine with the webcam monitor it's bundled with, and IchatAV. Skype works fine if I don't broadcast video or if the webcam is disconnected, what makes me believe it is a skype issue.

I have tried anything found on the forum, installing the macam component, making sure no IOXpert is present, uprading skype to the latest version, upgrading MacOS to it's latest, etc... but keep having the same scenario.

Hope it helps and we can eventually use these kind of cheap webcam on mac skype. yes.png

Your CPU doesn't meet the minimum spec for video:

you need a G4 800Mhz

I know, but I doubt it comes from that matter, it doesn't work on a G5 either sadsmile.png .

Greetings All,
I have today for the first time made a Skype call with my Mac (powerbook G4, 1gHz,512 ) using Vers. 1.5. Now I have downloaded 2.0.0.3 and I would like to communicate with video between Mac and Win. I realize this is rather new stuff. Can I expect to be successful? I would be glad if some of you could recommend the following: Camera type for the powerbook and any necessary software. I am certainly grateful for any advice you can give.

As long as you're using OS 10.3.9 or later, you should be fine. Minimum RAM requirement for Skype is 512, so you're at the lower limit. I'd suggest quitting all other programs when using Skype, just to be on the safe side. Even better: boost the RAM in your G4.

There are a number of cameras that work with the Mac. Take a peek at the forum for some ideas. That said, I must confess to using the fairly pricey iSight. I've not had ANY problems, unlike some folks who use some other camera/software combinations. I also use a USB heasdset (actually, a Sennheiser PC155 connected to a Griffin iMic, which in turn plugs into the Mac's USB port). Some others prefer a headset that doesn't require an adapter. For me, with my G4 PB (1.5GHZ, 1Gig DRAM), it isn't a problem. I also use (occasionally) a Keyspan VP-24A cordless handset, but prefer the headset. The IPEVO Free-1 USB handset is also good. MacMice today began marketing a USD30 handset about which I know nothing (http://www.macnn.com/articles/06/10/13/danger.phone.ships/).

Be aware that audio feedback can be an issue with the PB's built-in mic or the iSight's mic: the speakers are too close to the sound input source, and Skype's echo cancellation isn't up to the task. A headset or handset yields high quality sound over a broadband connection.

Hope all that is of some help...

If Skype is crashing, it should be generating a crash log at Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Skype.crash.log
You should post this log file as an attachment, and/or send it to skype support.

Good idea. Attached is the log for a single crash (I emptied it before reproducing the crash).
