Hello,

My sister is running Ubuntu/i386, and is having problems with Skype.

First of all.. Previously she was running a non-beta version, which had the quirk that every time she'd made a call, Skype would refuse to use the sound device. So in order to be able to call again, she needed to quit Skype and then restart it.

That's why I decided to install the a Skype beta for her. But then a new problem arose. She could hear me, but I could not hear her. I tried several betas. All with the same problem.

Now she's installed the Skype 1.3.something release, and it still doesen't work.

Oh, and a friend of mine is having the exact same problem.

Anyone know what to do?

I want to stress the point THAT THE SOUND DID WORK BEFORE. So SHE HASN'T BEEN MEDDLING WITH THE ALSA CONFIGURATION. In fact, SHE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO DO THAT.

Anyone have any ideas? Have the recent changes in Skype make it necessary to meddle around in the /etc configuration files?

I have no solution but, since no-one else has replied to this, I wanted to add that I've had exactly the same problem with all the 1.3 betas and 1.3.0.53 GOLD release. 1.2.0.18 continues to work fine for me (but with all its disadvantages; I really want 1.3 for proper ALSA compatibility).

Ok, then there are at least three users with the same problem that I know of.

Common denominators?

What distribution and version of Linux do you run?

Hi!

I had the same problems (on the same OS) and I resolved both.

On the old version it was just a matter to rename or delete a .wav file (don't remember now what and where, but a google search will do the trick) in order to fix the problem with the sound device for calls after the first one.

For the beta version -that is already a official release- it can be really stupid but just open the "Volume Control" (Alsa Mixer) by clicking on the volume icon, then open the "capture" tab and you will see that "line-in", "microphone" and "capture" are all disabled... just enable... and it's done.

At least for me worked just like that.

Ubuntu is really bad with Skype interoperatibility. Try to use another distro.

Hello. I'm using Fedora Core 5 for amd64.
Skype 1.2.0 worked correctly, now i have installed the new version and my input doesn't work! I can hear but cannot be heard.
Any solution?
There is no a 2.0 beta anywhere?

Read lutra's reply. For my sister it (kind of) helped to enable the capture and the mic device in the Volume Control-app. It is flakey, though.

...later...

Ok, it is *really* flakey. After a while, it'll hang up. Just like that. For no apparent reason. And after a call, it will complain about the sound device not working. Restarting Skype does not always help, which (I must admit) kind of points to a problem outside of Skype.

Does anyone know any way to restart the sound demon? As far as I have gathered, Skype uses ALSA, and ALSA is just another process. If the problem is in ALSA somewhere, restarting it could potentially help -- right? (I'm just guessing..)

Skype 1.3 for Linux is NOT ready for prime time, IMHO. Time to downgrade to 1.2, I guess. :-(

I am using Debian etch. The problem is not with the settings of my sound device: I have sound in both directions, in fact, but when I do a test call, although I can hear the incoming sound (it was very choppy in the earlier betas, but has now improved) my voice played back to me is chopped up so much as to be incomprehensible.
