Hello everybody! I am a victim of spoof mail. crying.png Recently, I have received some e-mails look like genuine one which asked me in one or another manner to fill in my registration details such as Member ID and password. Most of them came from "Ebay" but two days ago I recieved an e-mail as if from Skype. This e-mail tells you that you could get 30 mins of free calling on regular phones if you provided "Skype" with the e-mails of three friends of yours. When you click on Refer a Friend button the e-mail redirects you on a page requesting your ID information and three e-mails of your friends. BE AWARE! It is obviusely a spoof mail.
I think that there is a big attack on Ebay users as such e-mails go mainly to those who members of Ebay. If you use PayPal service as well please be very careful as there are spoof e-mails from "PayPal" as well.

For more information about how to protect yourself please go to Ebay or PayPal websites. There are plenty of information about this.

Members of the forum! Please give your advice on how to protect yourself.

To Moderators: Please make a section on the Home page alerting users about spoof e-mails.

Thank You!

I am a long time skype subscriber from the version 1 days. I like it. It is useful.

However, today I received 2 junk emails from skype inviting me to take their software and join their community. I am already a member - but these emails came though on different, personal addresses.

The only way Skype could have got these email addresses was by buying a list from spammers.

There are notes here about the possibility of phishing, but the code in these referred to skype servers. I think they were real NOT phishing. In effect skype was spamming me.

Have you also noticed, those of you who use eBay, that a skype pop-up now occurs whenever you try to view an item?

I thnk this is unacceptable, intrusive and marketing of the lowest common denominator. Given the above situation, I personally am now looking for an alternative.

rachelneil
I found some information on one particularly dangerous email scam that I think everyone should be aware of.
I've posted it on my blog: http://everythingschooling.blogspot.com

I confess to being thoroughly confused; At the same time as receiving warnings from my daughter that skype was being phished I received an email apparently from skype about a "user survey" I was dubious ; but now I've received a reminder !!! Is there any way to tell if such a "survey" is genuine - cos skype is going to get very poor results if it is genuine - and the source web site looks as phony as as the other 50 scams I now receive each day

Somewhat surprisingly, the US government actually has a website and an email address you can use to report nasty stuff; this goes to the FTC. (Whether anything happens after using it, I don't know, but it does make me feel better.)

Check out http://www.ftc.gov/spam/ and the email address spam@uce.gov

The instructions say to forward any suspicious email as an attachment, rather than a direct or quoted forward.

And eBay has a email address for the same reason (and I actually have received replies when I use this);

spoof@ebay.com

Whether PayPal or Skype have a dedicated email address for reporting spoofs, phishing attacks, etc. I don't know - any comments?

Yup, I received the same, link points to secure.skype.com.6b8x45.cn in my case (IP 79.116.186.173)
Links to a chinese site, domain name owner: Richard Shoemaker, mail: richardbshoemaker@frontdrift.com
And guess who is owner of 'your' link site? right, the same guy, other IP address.
The domain name is registered only yesterday, I guess he registered a lot of names to prevent all being blocked before he can abuse your BILLING details, not your Skype details, he is after your creditcard.

I have been working at a cybercenter and I know how difficult it was to have a domain name registered (contact data, addresses), all was verified, I wonder why it was so easy for this guy, so I took a look at the source.
the name servers where the domain is registered are from borxl.com from an Ukrainan DNS provider imena.ua, they sell domain names, so maybe they are not so difficult.
IP address of one server is from an Hungarian company PR-Telecom, the other IP adress is from a Romanian company Romania data Systems.

Skype, up to you to deal with it from here :-) If you want I give you the phone numbers of the contacts there
as well.

I have received two messages this morning from Malaysia from people purporting to be lawyers acting on behalf of the estate of two different people with my surname but differing first names. They are reported to have dies in different ways and to have left estates of 6.5 million dollars. The sender suggests that you agree to say you are a relative and that they will split the proceeds evenly. I have not replied and have blocked the senders. Why does my privacy setting switches to "Allow anyone". I have asked Skype to correct this problem in the past but they refuse to reply causing a real problem for me and others. Please always check your settings because it can put your computer at risk and Skype is not interested in correcting this problem.

Strange
It's not a problem that I am aware of and has not been reported elsewhere.
Are your privacy settings changing after you set them and click on ''SAVE''?

You are being ''scammed'' - not ''phished''.
This is a well-known and very obvious scam.
Ignore and so NOT follow any links.

I've got spoof skype message as well.

It is written in Chinese and refer to a Website http://sky98.41la.cn/ in China, which look like a offical Skype Website with message of Skype's lottery and list of winners.

The skype message said that is is from Skype for System Announcement and inform that I am a lucky winner of a lottery (prize of RMB96,000) conducted by Skype.

The sender skype name is skype-5756561

I think Skype should take action against this kind of fraud.

and I couldn't sign in my account with my usual dtails which I didn't change

I IMMEDIATELY SENT A SUPPORT REQUEST BUT STILL DIDN'T GET ANY ANSWER!!

After some days of silence I opened a new account, got hold of my contacts to discover that meantime the hacker who declares to be called Mustafa, contacted many of my buddies, I had to alert everyone to block my old account.

Today I received a paypal billing for a transaction which I never ordered only to discover that once you sign in for skypeout you keep the autorcharge flagged by default!!

I already took care of pay pal setting, but come on!

Now I asked you to ckeck out evereverse account and to block it already as is causing a great deal of problems, in term of personal privacy and financial matters too!
Your lack of support up to now is absolutely incredible and the accounting system is definitely not secure.
