I doubt I will receive any replies.....but does anyone know if a 64 bit version of skype will be available for linux anytime soon if ever? I switched to 64 bit untuntu and cannot find a package, and I don't have the option of compiling from source since skype is not open source.

no, I don't that that is possible in the near future. There is currently too many tasks at hand that is more important than a 64-bit version of Skype. Try to use the 32-bit Skype on your 64-bit environment

*mods, admins, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

All modern Linux 64-bit distros have 32-bit libraries bundled for backwards compatibility.

Libraries for backward compatibility are created for temporary support old software. I think this is lame to write new software with 32-bit only compatibility
