I just wanted to say that there is an obvious contradition where on one hand Skype site says "no adware..." and on the other forces on people the Google toolbar or the number-recognition for web pages. I wish you would leave the toolbar out of your installer. And as for the number-recognition, it is a waste of time in my experience as it misrecognises all kind of numbers as telephone numbers and makes it difficult to select them. I deinstalled it but why do I have to do this extra work? Maybe these bits are not formally adware but for all practical purposes they are...

Hi Stanislav,
Thank you for your input! I am sorry you feel that we made you do extra work! The purpose of the phone number recognition is quite the opposite - to save you mouse-clicks if you find a phone number on the web that you want to call.
Of course, false positives are annoying and we are doing everything we can to get rid of them. It would be very helpful if you could give us examples of web pages where we get it wrong.

About the difficulty in selecting, I agree with you - that is an issue. For that specific purpose we have added a right-click action to the highlight, which allows you to copy the phone number (in international format) easily.

Also - thanks for helping out on this beta!

Hi,

Thanks for your responses!

A typical example of a misrecognised number would be a sports score. For example tennis scores as seen on the BBC website or on Eurosport and elsewhere. Cannot give you any specific links as these pages are not static. But a typical score might look like that:

6-3 7-6 (7-3)

In my experience they were all misrecognised as telephone numbers.

Any word on the Google toolbar? You know, the lack of ads in Skype was for me one of its most attractive features. And given Google’s well-publicised dodgy practices with data collection and redistribution this new apparent association makes me feel uneasy about Skype too.

Adware or not, why include them in the installer? This is how software becomes 'bloatware'. If people want these extra features they should be available as a separate download.

Aye! Hear! Hear! I should have mentioned that this felt like a crime against beauty to my minimalist's soul.
