When I try to open the Video Preview for Mac, the splashscreen appears for a few seconds, then Skype closes - no error message, just 'The application Skype has unexpetadly closed'. Any ideas?

If you are using a USB webcam you should have Macam, latest version 0.8.8, installed and the macam.component folder dragged to /library/quicktime. There are many writeup on this issue in this forum.

Also make sure you have the latest Skype version, currently 1.5.0.77, of the video preview installed.
