After looking at the Skype Buttons, I wanted to find a way to detect a user's status. While you offer 5 or so different icons with status, it is not possible to detect using javascript or otherwise a user's status so that I can display custom status images.
Is it only possible to use the images skype provides via mystatus.skype.com ?

certanly you can.
I though the same, that you could only use the skype buttons, but just read about skypeWeb, you can get an xml file showing your status or a txt file ie:
CODE
http://mystatus.skype.com/yourSkypeID.xml
The XML shows your status in different languages
