Please, how would it be possible to get an official viewpoint on this?

Can anyone from Skype comment?
I am about to make a buying decision which is strongly affected by the support of Skype
on a Symbian UIQ3 phones (namely Sony-Ericsson P990).

Can someone tell if there is work in progress to have Skype running on this particular handset (Sybmian UIQ platform) and if there is, when could we expect to have the software.

There are lots of questions on the topic in these forums, but there seem to be no satisfactory replies
from Skype - please, Skype, as customers, we do deserve a concrete answer to this!

Thanks
tec
Hey folks, I'll answer it myself

I have talked with one person from Skype support and according to them:

"Skype for Symbian will be released soon" cool.png

So there is hope I guess. Don't know why it is such a secret though...

Thanks for finding out. I'm sure you aren't the only looking forward to this...

I just bought a SE P990 so I could get rid of my MDA. I'm dying to know when the release is. I'd love to be able to use Skype on my cell phone when at home and also when traveling!

Only problem is... band consumption makes it hard for no flat owners (my test got something inbtw 5 and 8Kbps! The 1 and only cheap way to use skype is WiFi, which means being under coverage. Here in Europe it ain't that common...

Well I don't even know if this works yet but I found this java skype version as a download on getjar.

Maybe not the full UIQ but perhaps this j2me version can keep us going while waiting for official support.

I'll get back if I manage to get it working

Guys, this is what appears on the page 64 of the whitepaper of the upcoming UIQ3 phone, SE P1i

ok, this was already mentioned, but it seems people are not giving it the attention it deserves

QUOTE

Skype – Voice over IP application that lets the user make mobile phone calls over the Internet.
Try and buy application that can be downloaded to the phone using a Web link in the phone.

this means skype for UIQ3 should be out soon, because the P1 should be out in August

your right we should wait them to make a software that compatible to p990i....

It's funny to read all above. Already one year passed from the first massage and there is no any developments at all. I have Sony Ericsson P1i and before M600i. I can't understand the position of Skype, why till that moment version for UIQ do not issued yet. Most of all I read a lot of topics on that matter sins 2005 and there is only: “I hear from somebody that it coming” “I hear that it will be issued till the end of the year”. There several “Skype certified” developers who providing software but all it not working proper and what is really making crazy for making calls from Skype to PC Skype users, you should pay Skype out credit and airflow of your mobile operator. Can somebody explain why when I am using Wi Fi connection and basicly no difference: are You calling from PC to PC or from mobile phone connected to WiFi to PC. It’s really making all this Skype Certified software useless. Windows mobile issued and working longtime why version for UIQ not issued? Hope that somebody from Skype moderators will reply that question which have been asked since year.

Personally, I don't think this is ever going to happen. It's been, what, nearly 3 years now? Skype for Symbian is the ultimate form of vapourware. And don't give me any of that "technical difficulty" stuff either: there's been a Skype client out for WindoZe phones for ages, third parties have done their own thing with the protocol (for example, I run Fring on my N80. It's OK, but I'd really rather not run it as it's clunky), so they can't claim "oh, but it's a challenge to port it over to Symbian".

Bollocks. It's not rocket science, guys. You can port a protocol stack to practically ANYTHING if you really want to. Symbian's just an OS. It simply ain't THAT hard.

So the answer is, they just don't want to.

Whether it's political, business-partner-in-bed, or whatever, it doesn't matter. Skype for Symbian will never see the light of day, but I wish they'd prove me wrong.

When I bought my N80, the prospect of Skype for Symbian was a major influence, what with the WiFi on-board, but now, when my next phone purchase comes up in September, I'm most likely going to drop Symbian all together, because for me, having Skype in the handset, and WiFi, are a must.

Yeah, when I bought my P1i I was really hoping to get a real official Skype version for it.
I must have been very stupid indeed.

Hi Tec,

I found a very great company in India which basically an offshore outsourcing company. Recently they made a very gud software for me in Symbian UIQ.

If you want any software in this for mobile and all, you can visit http://www.rapidsofttechnologies.com
