i just wonder:
is there anything we (linux skype users) can do to help/foster or simply speed up the process of getting video calling for linux?

Please read the forum to find that all along video was not planned until Release 1.5. We are now at release 1.4 and work is underway on R1.5.

Andy and Berkus, please hang in there, the end of these complaints is in sight...

I guess we could all sit quietly and not bother the developers! wink.png

Ok, I'm not here to moan about the wait for video support in the Linux version. I have a genuine question. Video support has been release in the windows domain for ages, and there have been improvements to that feature release on release. So, when video finally does arrive for Linux, will it be comparable to the earliest windows version, or will the technologies developed and lessons learned from the windows product since its early days be translated into what we will see in the Linux product?

We will be using technology similar to that in Windows Skype 3.6.

One thing to keep in mind is that drivers on Linux are usually not as full-featured as the WIndows equivalents, and there's very little company support in the Linux webcam driver space, so I wouldn't expect exactly the same quality on Linux and Windows for this reason.

However, drivers are generally cleaner (no required bundled applications), etc, so there is a positive side. Anybody who has used a webcam with Windows lately will know what I mean.

Hi, this all sounds rather encouraging. Can't wait till the grant moment is there. smile.png
What I do would like to know though, will there be support for both v4l and v4l2? In the past while trying various cross-platform video conferencing applications v4l2 support often seemed to be lacking. Obviously that's a shame as most if not all high-quality/uvc webcams seem to require that. Will that support be featured in the video-release?

Cheers,

Mark

What webcams do you (read developers) use to test the video quality and general day to day bug fixes? Also what flavour of linux are you using?

maybe this will help:

Skype will support both v4l and v4l2 devices. My recommendation at the moment is on pwc and gspca based cameras based on personal experiences.

I'm afraid I can't field any Skype-video-specific questions at this time. With regards to questions not related to video development of Skype, I personally have a Philips SPC 900NC webcam, which I think is the best webcam under Linux that I have personally used. I run Slackware Linux myself.

I love focussing on good news! Lets only do that from now on. smile.png And the fact that you use a Philips webcam with the gspca driver is great news too: I own a Philips/gspca too!
Andypoo
The Philips SPC 900NC actually uses the pwc driver, which is available in recent 2.6 kernels.

gspca driver is okay, but sometimes init takes a long time, which can lead to some issues in my experience. (Owners of Logitech QuickCam STX can agree tongueout.png)

I have created a thread here to gather feedback on which device drivers people use for video cards and webcams:

I ask everybody waiting on video to vote in this poll.

Thanks,
Andy.

Hi, could you please just let us know whether there is a possibility that we could be happy sometimes around the Christmas?? I think that this is so much doubtful question that you should for a once be so kind and try to answer simply Yes or No, without worrying about breaking Skype's internal rules. Thanks a lot Santa.
Andypoo
I wouldn't rule it out.

Maybe you'd have better luck convincing all your Windows friends to use Ekiga or Openwengo for Windows. You may just succeed in that before Xmas. Hi hi. smile.png

(just found out there are Ekiga and Openwengo clients for Windows)

Well, we waited for the video support for half a year now. At monday we started to migrate our 400 customers to openwengo. Sorry guys & bye.

Time-to-market takes the decisions.
