We have a new Beta update released today, thanks to the hard work of the team to get this out. This includes you beta testers!

Nice to see that the dropdown to select the device for the ringing is enabled, but is it supposed to work?

If I select the same Logitech USB Headset as I use for calls it gets the ringing alright, selecting my (perfectly working) "Intel 82801CA-ICH3" as the ringing device results in no ringing whatsoever.

Is there anything I can do to help you investigate (like enableing a log file or something)?

Happy to see the new beta yes.png
But the changelog looks strange... Why we have the word 'Removed' two times?
I mean... Can some of the devs explain a little bit?

The 'Getting Started' wizard was Ok /At least in my case - Slackware Current/.

Anyway... Thank you, skype.png

1. Using 1.2 is OK - good sound quality but no ring for incoming.

2. Downloaded 1.3.0.30 last night and battled to install (linux noobie) - when it ran it still said 1.2 in about??

3. Moving on - installed 1.3.0.37 today (successfully) hoping problems solved. Installed - gave proper version number but no incoming ring - in fact no sound at all. Also if make a call - i.e echo123 - hear nothing and cannot hang up - only way to terminate call is to close Skype completely.

4. Made sure 1.2 was uninstalled, deleted .skype directory - still same problem.

5. Manged to to install .30 - still the same problem. (Again delted .skype as sometimes get error message re profile database... Also rebooted to make sure that was not the problem - no difference).

6. Went back to 1.2 and all good again except no incoming ring alert (or message alerts)

7. Running PCLinuxOS 0.93. All other sounds/audio work

Any further info required - happy to help

The interface looks alot better (than 1.2) - nice pop ups for incoming messages, just no sound alert

Good luck
Diego Dave
I guess on rereading other forum topics this is still the Alsa problem with Mandrivia? It works fine with Amarok and "I believe" it is loaded fine? Use the artsdsp -m command but still no luck. Any confirmation that someone has gotten this Beta to work in Mandrivia or derivatives would be appreciated... blush.png

Except for my comments in post #3 in this topic, the sound works ok for me using Mandriva 2006 with the 10.1-mdk RPM.

If I select the same Logitech USB Headset as I use for calls it gets the ringing alright, selecting my (perfectly working) "Intel 82801CA-ICH3" as the ringing device results in no ringing whatsoever.

Just noted that it actually works great at home where I still use a "Logitech USB Headset" for calls but the "VIA 8233-Pre" for ringing.

Different hardware but except for that all versions of Mandriva should be the same, for reasons I can't explain (even to myself) I use KDE at work and Gnome at home, if that could matter.

If there is anything I can do to help investigate why it does not work with the "Intel 82801CA-ICH3", please let me know.

Hi people.
I'm using .37 beta, and I've found (even on .30) a very little bug in voicemail icon on user's profile visualization. This is present in italian and english language selection.

well , 1.3 beta is still unusable for me .
Too much problems on sound quality.

I've liked seen the "Ring PC Speaker" finally working and the ring in a different device working too.

But , i still miss a way to bind to default alsa device instead directly to hw:0.0.
In this moment i can not use dmix in skype.

BUG:
Clear history locks skype.

When will the sms work on skype for linux.

i'm using windows version on wine however some path problem prevents skype from finding all its icons so the interface is really bad.

IMHO Skype for Linux should have one more option: possibility to choose different audio devices for recording and playing. I have built-in sound card and microphone in USB camera. In Windows I can choose different devices, in Linux it's impossible.
digiso
It's working well for me so far. I have Suse 10.0. I am glad for every update.
Sound quality so far is ok. I had many problems with sound quality before. I have two accounts at same time open, which works without problems. Only the webpresence does not seem to work for me.

There is still the problem with delays gradually becoming bigger. After a while it feels like talking to someone on the moon. This was also a problem in the previous 1.3.x beta as mentioned here for example:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic...mp;#entry270212

Basically this renders Skype 1.3.x for Linux still useless, as the core feature doesn't work.

I'm running Kubuntu 6.06 and use ALSA with a Plantronic headset.

I want to congratulate the Skype for Linux developers for so quickly putting out a bug fix version of 1.3.0.xx.

I use Skype every day, many times a day. I continue to use Skype for Linux, even though my dual boot machine makes Skype for Windows available and even that version is significantly better at the basic process of having a good conversation over the phone. I use Linux and I want Skype to support a Linux version.

Thanks again for continuing to work on the product. I hope that subsequent improvements can eliminate the most important gap between Windows and Linux Skype: the quality of the calls.

I´ve just noticed something with SkypeOut. When calling a landline, Skype plays its own ¨ringing¨ sound, but you can also hear the ringing tone from the phone itself. If that makes sense.
Apart from that, it´s great!

I just upgraded from 1.3.0.30 to 1.3.0.37. However, skype now hangs on start up. Using "strace -p `pidof skype`" shows that it stops at "futex(0x89bb5d0, FUTEX_WAIT, 2, NULL". Any idea what the problem is? I am running a 2.6.17.3 kernel on debian unstable.

What do you mean with "Too much problems on sound quality" ? means that it has cuts when you're talking?
I experienced blanks and cutting, but I can't know if it was connection related problem for now.

another thing. not be able to use dmix means that u should not be able to play 2 sound source (skype + xmms for example) at the same time on computer that does not have hardware mixing support. right?

Since I started using the skype beta I am just able to use the first sound device. Changing it to the second one doesn't do anything. No difference in OSS or ALSA either.
hitsov
Alsa sound quality it kinda sucky for me(both betas)
The sound i hear is ok, but if I call "skype test call"
when using oss its kinda ok (maybe my connection is not the best)
but with alsa what i hear is all choppy and even sometimes i get no sound at all.

slackware 10.2 updated to current.
kernel 2.6.16.9
Intel 82801CA-ICH3 with CS4205 at 0xd800, irq 7(sound card)

alsa-driver-1.0.11_2.6.16.27-i486-5
alsa-lib-1.0.11-i486-1
alsa-oss-1.0.11-i486-1
alsa-utils-1.0.11-i486-2

hope that helps

Just checked, and the workaround I am using still works on Skype 1.3.0.37.
If you run Skype through skype_dsp_hijacker, it will use alsa device
named skype instead of a default one, and this can be mapped to dmix.

See more:
http://juljas.net/linux/skype/#hijacker
http://juljas.net/linux/skype/alsa-configuration.html

I hope that next version of Skype will have the ability to edit the ALSA
device name used for calls and for ringing, so configurations other than
the hardware ones could be used without additional hacking.

I always had trouble since installing an earlier version of Skype for Linux, forget which one now, with getting sound to work on it properly, ie, "Problem with sound device" error, since installing the last beta, and this beta, sound has worked properly, though the microphone in my laptop refuses to capture, but that is more a system-wide problem, not a skype problem.

Upon purchasing an internet phone from a supermarket that has it's own internet phone service, mainly for the handset to use it with skype, I can now use skype properly, I plugged it in to my laptop, ran skype, configured the sound device, called echo123 and as luck would have it, it worked.

Great job well done to all those at Skype who have worked on this, I've been waiting some time for something usuable to come out and that wait was worth it smile.png

As always, excellent to see more updates being given to the public, thanks for fixing the various and sundry bugs around, we're getting closer to a solid ALSA version every time.

However, I also noticed on this version that the presence indicators seemed to be much less accurate than in previous versions. Friends have been indicated as there for several hours, but suddenly vanish, after which skype reports the last seen time as several hours ago. Also, I've received text messages from a friend, who's then gone off-line, and had skype report that they were last seen *before* the text messages were received. We're also both in the same timezone, so it shouldn't be a "my time or their time" issue. Anyway, I've gone back to 1.3.0.30 to see if I get the same sorts of results, and hopefully we can find when this issue was introduced.

In the meantime, keep up the great work! 5:)

Thank you for the new Linux version. I use skype somewhat irregularly since it hasn't always worked so smoothly with arts, and I really hate booting to Windows. I have high hopes for skype with alsa support in. Thank you for not forgetting the Linux users...

The problem with the Contacts list is also happening to me on the 1.3.0.37 version (Kubuntu 6.06.1 Dapper). Contacts that are there one minute are gone the next (perhaps after making a call?). I also yesterday was editing my call list and suddenly the entire list was deleted, including all voice mails. That's a serious bug, I think. I was deleting specific call list items, but never asked for everything to just get blown away.

I also get the bug of alerts of new events not turning off, even after clicking on the new events notices. I have to shut down and re-open Skype to get them to stop making the noise.

Looking forward to continued improvement on these and other problems.

Thanks.

Uninstalled pevious repository version of Skype on Ubuntu 6.06LTS and installed beta deb from Skype. The things I've noticed so far, faster load times, on initial call poor voice quality as compaired to the Windows version, program would not dial out to "Test Call" on the third try until after I went to the consol and "killall esd". Then everything worked great as well as calls to a land line. It looks like Skype is moving in the right direction although not totally ironed out yet. I know it's asking for a lot, but sip compatability would be nice. It would keep me from loading Gizmo or Ekiga. smile.png

Edit: I just noticed if you change the status from "online" to "away", you cannot change back to "Online" without first choosing "skype me" then "Online". Hmmmm.

Yes , I get blanks and cuttings, and i know it is not connection related 'cause when i'm using 1.2.0.18 quality is really good.

Yes , i do not have hardware mixing, and skype apparentrly binds itself against hw instead default device.

I still have the problems mentioned in the posts about the previous beta - oss works fine, but when using ALSA the sound becomes choppy for the other party. It happens after one-two minutes at most. I wonder if all the people saying it works fine have such problems....

btw. I'm using FC5 with current updates

kernel 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5
alsa-libs/tools 1.0.11-4.rc2
qt-3.3.6-0.4.fc5
CMI 8738 soundcard automatically configured with system-config-sound

PS:
Described problem appears (almost only) when I say long sentences quickly. Any suggestions how to fix this?

I have this problem now.

There is still the problem with delays gradually becoming bigger.
the 1.30.37 version works very well for me on fc5 but after talking about 15 minutes I have to restart skype because it starts stuttering. When somebody calls me and skype has been running for a while, I also have to restart skype. Nevertheless, for those 15 minutes the quality is very good, and I think I finally prefer this version to 1.1.0.20 which is the last version where the sound worked really well

I have this problem now.
My system is ubuntu edgy.
I can use with skype normally at first, but after I installed KDE, skype can not work, even I delete the .Skype and .qt directory, and after I deleted KDE, skype can not work too.

My system:Linux wlxpc 2.6.17-6-686 #2 SMP Fri Aug 11 22:09:15 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

I see a similar situation. System is up-to-date FC5 on AMD64. The 64-bit nature of things shouldn't be an issue at all though.

Hello again.

it seems that, when I run just an X server, metacity and skype, the sound quality is much better. There are still moments, when the call-partner does not hear a word, but it's lot, lot better as when using a completely started KDE.... Could it be, that skype conflicts with some KDE services, libs or apps?

Another question:
Can you somehow supply the .ts files or sort of tools (for creating qm files without exposing the skype infrastructure) in order to enable custom translation?

hello!
i can't use chinese input method ( such as fcitx and scim) in the skype 1.3.0.37, but it can in 1.3.0.30
system:debian etch,gnome 2.14
chinese input method:fcitx

1.3.0.37 seems to work pretty well on my setup, but it seems to refuse to die when user logs out. After logging out some skype processes are left behind, and when the same user logs back in, skype dies with "database is corrupt"-message. After doing "killall skype" it can be restarted normally again.

Do any linux versions of skype allow DTMF tones during a call?

Do any linux versions of skype allow DTMF tones during a call?

Theoretically each. In practice without some workarounds (external program to generate DTMF) it is hardly working.
Justin Paulson
I've got a Fedora 5 system, and here's what works and what appears not to:

Installation: installs smoothly. I even get a menu icon.
Segfaults/crashes: none so far.
Sound: can't get ALSA to work natively, but the ALSA-OSS emulation works great, at least according to the test call.
Skype test call: works every time. I can hear myself loud and clear.

Directory searches: inconsistent. On one search a user might be there, and on the next, not.
Calling: haven't yet been successful, except with the test call. When Skype can't connect, with one of my contacts the error consistently is "user not online" (which is possible), and with another it consistently says "user not found" (which is not).
Authorization: appears to be broken both ways? I've had repeated authorization requests sent to me from a known user that never showed up, and authorization requests I've sent haven't made it to the other end either. (Perhaps this is related to the directory glitch?)

Thanks for the Linux version. I'll keep testing.

Cheers.

I've tried the beta 1.3.0.37 on fedora 5, 6 test 3, debian unstable.(on two machines) The only problem I had (and still have) was that after a while no one can hear me, because the outgoing sound is so choppy ... the incoming is not always good as well. The connection speed was also stable, so it should not be the problem (windows skype on same machines works just fine).

When skype stays in the tray for some time and somebody calls me, then even the ringing sound is choppy and the application barely responds.

I don't know if this is a bug, but when I add a contact to the list, it only appears to the account where i've added it. in the case with windows and linux: if I add on windows, it's not shown on linux and vice versa. or if i use the same skype account on two windows computers. I'm not sure, but I think new contacts appear in few days, or few logins.

Here, running 1.3.0.37 on Ubuntu Edgy:

- Using the ALSA back-end, I can only get incoming audio; people at the other end don't hear my voice at all.
- Using the OSS back-end, audio works both ways, but sound is bubbly and distorted.

The above behavior can also be verified using the Test Call service.

This is on a ThinkPad 240x, which has the following hardware:
Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic Crystal CS4281 PCI Audio (rev 01)

Trying the same experiment using Ekiga and the ALSA back-end, everything works both ways: I hear incoming audio and others hear my voice at the other end, which confirms that the hardware is not at fault.

FYI, I registered the soft lockup issue in the ubuntu issue tracker
See https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+sourc...6.15/+bug/53216

It's killing me (machine hangs for 10 minutes each time I use skype after some kind of activity.

Questions to those having the issue, do you also use vmware ?

Have you enabled and general "capture" mixer and put it at 100%?
OSS works even without it, but not ALSA. I had the same problem, but solved.

With regards sound issues and Ubuntu, please ensure the following:

1. Upgrade to Skype 1.3.0.50.
2. If you're running ALSA < 1.0.11, upgrade to 1.0.11. At the moment, I don't recommend 1.0.12 due to some isolated issues. 1.0.13rc's seem okay so far here.
3. If you're running esd and ALSA >= 1.0.11, killall esd.

Let me know if this helps.

Andypoo.

Significant new problem with 1.3.0.50-1 beta. Now, all contacts in list are removed after each call. In order to bring them back, I need to sign out and sign back in again.

Hope a new -2 can be updated quickly to leave the Contact list alone after each call.

Still want to say thanks for the continuing efforts and the new Beta.
