Full Version: Version 0.91.0.3

Today we released Skype for Linux version 0.91.0.3. You can see the full change list in the release notes, but here are the more important things.

Languages. Sprache. Lingua. Jazyki. Skype for Linux UI is now available in 20 languages, set it in the Tools menu. Some strings are not yet localized but mostly it's OK. In the next versions, we will have a system for using and exchanging the .lang files between Windows and Linux versions, so if you're thinking of localizing Skype for Linux into some other language, you can already start by looking at the .lang files in the Translations forum.

Audio device selection. It's no longer hardwired to /dev/dsp - you can instead select a device from dropdown. Currently the speaking, recording and ringing device must be the same - it will improve.

Change password feature (Options, Privacy).

Conference hosting.

Note to those who pull it automatically from download.skype.com: the file and directory naming scheme in 0.91.0.3 is different from previous version (_ instead of - used), in the next versions we will go back to the scheme we used previously.

I did encounter some minor bugs in this new version (dynamic binary tar.bz2):

- I'm not able to change the language. When I choose a language from the menu nothing happens but this output in the shell: (also when restarted the language stay english)
CODE
language selected: 3

MainForm: profilePstnStatusUpdate

profilePstnStatusUpdate: (null)

profilePstnStatusUpdate: 0.000000
EDIT: Okay, works fine after I moved the qm-files to /usr/share/skype/lang, just like the README says.

- In Advanced search when pressing the Clear-button the birthday is set to 09/14/1752 and not 00/00/0000. It works like it was 00/00/0000 but does look a little off.

Currently it searches for the language files ONLY in /usr/share/skype/lang. We'll make it search in future versions also from current dir.

True. The Qt default date selector widget is not very friendly/usable, the same also goes for profile editor - hard to differentiate month/date fields. Will eventually be replaced with something friendlier.

I've try the skypeOut function on linux.
I've bought my credits ==> OK
I've made several tests. Each time users hear a call back of their own voice.
I don't know if it is a skype bug or a bug from network .

So, just a little more and it will be very great to phone with my PC.

Most likely it's a problem with your sound setup - in most cases where I've encountered this problem it's caused by either a loudspeaker + mic setup (echo cancellation can handle some cases; if not try to move the mic further away from your speakers) or an unmuted "Capture" channel on the sound card. Please make sure that the input channel labeled "Capture" in your mixer is de-selected and muted, or your sound output will be fed back into the input channel causing all sorts of distortions and echo.

Gentoo: Up and running! Nice, witch Bluecurve gui and everything.

How about pulling some more descriptive name for that Audio device selection from /sys or something?

So, how should skype on Linux handle callto url's?

It doesn't seem to have any command line switches and allways starts up a new instance. Shouldn't it allways connect to the running instance instead, (Like most other apps on my Gnome desktop), and only allow one?

My desktop/gnome/url-handlers/callto/command says this right now:
gnomemeeting -c %s

Does that sound like something skype should try to emulate?

woo! thanks for the hard work. i was waiting for conference hosting smile.png

running gentoo here, skype runs without problems.

It could be a solution. But it's work fine when I call a friend PC to PC.
User hear a call back of its own voice only in skypeOut mode.

I will continue my investigations.

True, this is a missing/upcoming capability in our todo list.

Thanx for the feedback!

You may wish to update the FAQ to reflect the features added in the last two releases:

QUOTE
Can I use SkypeOut in Skype for Linux beta?
SkypeOut (the service of calling from Skype to regular telephone numbers) is not yet available in the first versions of Skype for Linux beta.
Can I have conference calls with Skype for Linux beta?
Skype for Linux beta users can participate in conference calls as the conference client and see all the conference participants, but cannot host conference calls.

I am trying to get Skype up and running on Debian stable (3.0r1). It would be very valuable (I guess not only for me) if you could post a list of libraries required to run each particular binary.
Why? For example the Qt 3.2 dynamic tar.bz2 version doesn't require only Qt 3.2 (which I have and it doesn't work), it must be Qt 3.2 compiled with gcc 3.0+ (or what). Argh.

Something like
ldd ./skype >>html
would be quite valuable - and one would be able to find out many things in a easier way...

Thank you.

I have the same experinence what Mathieu from France has. I have a terrible echo but (for example) Gnomemeeting works well, and Windows version of skype does the same good job. So I think that Skype for Linux has some bug.
(I use SuSE 9.1)

I think the ui should be some nicer. Is it so difficult to make a nice QT ui with the qt theme. Now it looks so white, text is rendered very bad etc.
Fix that and you'd have a great program to me.

Ugly QT themes can hardly be blamed on Skype now can it wink.png Fire up qtconfig and pick a better one. I recommend "Plastik" - nice and crisp looking. If you run KDE, Skype should automatically adapt to your current KDE theme of course.

Oh and the fonts are great - if you have anti-aliased fonts enabled that is. Not quite sure how the static version is compiled but with dynamically linked Skype you should get AA fonts if you have QT compiled with support for 'em.

For your viewing pleasure, here's a screenshot of Skype running with AA fonts and the Plastik theme.
