Full Version: Trouble with FF Toolbar

Installing this Preview (2.6.0.44) while FF is open, seems to fail in a way that the toolbar for FF isn't properly installed. There is no warning, unfortunately.

However, I reinstalled the preview version after closing FF and it installs the FF toolbar 2.2.0.14 but there isn't a toolbar in FF. The extension dialog shows the toolbar installed but there is nothing functional or visible in the browser window.

Instead, there is a big bar below (!!!) the status bar that shows an orange hat-sign cake.png, nothing else. I guess that needs some fixing.

Probably Firefox was open here too while installing the Skype preview. But I've had no problem at all. The next time I started Firefox the toolbar was there. I don't know if this is the right way to go 'though. You have to bring it more to the attention of the user (in the setup) that toolbars are being installed with Skype. At the same time the user should be able to deselect this option easily.

The toolbar is only installed on the default browser. And it shouldn't matter if the browser is open or not. The next time it is restarted the toolbar will show up. There is an option not to install the toolbar in the Options of the installation. But pretty hard to find for a novice (talking from my experience).

The default browser thing is interesting. FF is my default browser but still has no toolbar visible. The extension list shows the toolbar installed but I can't find it anywhere.

I find the default browser interesting also because from the live tab in the new Skype application I clicked on running SkypeCast sessions and the detailed information opened in IE, not in FF. Maybe Skype doesn't recognize my default browser properly?

Jurgenhaas please restart your computer after that it should became visibe.

If you still do not have it then please report back.
jurgen
RaulLiive, this is the same I reported Jira where you confirmed the problem. In other words, the problem still exists on my PC, even after restart.
Raul Liive
Okay sorry for that.

We are working on issue to fix it.

When installing skype pre-release version 2.6.0.44, I got a lot of error messages relating to the firefox extension.

Firstly, however, I would like to say that I am very disappointed in skype that it tried to install this extension without asking!!!

Now about those error messages: The installer could not create any of the files necessary for the extension. I assume that is because I am keeping my firefox profile data on a different partition as the firefox installation. The skype installer seemed to try to create files and folders relevant to the skype firefox extension on my C: drive, although my firefox profile is located on my D: drive. Thus, for every file it tried to create I got an error message and the option to "abort", "retry" or "ignore". After clicking "ignore" a lot of times, skype seems to have installed fine and works. However no firefox extension.

I didn't want to install that extension anyway - but it's an error nevertheless. So, skype developers: please let the users decide for themselves whether they want your extension installed!

Thanks.
Raul Liive
Actually on advanced options there is option not to install FF or IE plugin.

Thank you for other notice. We will try to reproduce it.

i agree with the statement above!

The FireFox extension works ok for me, but ...
on my professional website it recognizes my VAT number as a telephone number! It shouldn't of course!

Faxnumbers are not "callable", as it should be, at least those where the word "fax" has been mentioned before the number!
Raul Liive
optiplex can you please make a screenshot of your installion and send it to me?

I'll just add my agreement here. The phone to Skype addon is very cute and many may want, but those of us doing websites, we have to see what our customers see and the general public. I disabled the toolbar, but it should at least be an option in the install.

The best solution would be if it could be toggled on and off without restarting Firefox.

On pages with lots of phone numbers, there is a noticable delay.

Oops, my fault. I was confusing different computer setups in my previous post. I must correct my description above. My firefox profile data is NOT stored on a different drive, however it is stored in a different folder from the usual:

C:mysettingsdir#program-data... is where I keep my firefox profile files

I will try to send you the screenshot via Skype (or how else am I supposed to send it?). Upon installation, this error pops up many time, I think each time the installer tries to create a file or folder.

About asking the user: I have now discovered the "options" button that lets you disable the FF installation, thanks. However, I do think it is somewhat unusal to find these options in the same box as the EULA.

Thanks for looking into it.

I ticked the MSIE Toolbar but it didn't install it anyway

This morning i noticed the FF toolbar didn't remeber my preference of yesterday: i had "unchecked" the feature, and it was "on" again!

It should remember my preference! sadsmile.png

I don't see in advanced options any option allowing not to install IE or FF plugin.
Raul Liive
On EULE screen after you have accepted it there is on the left bottom corner options button. Click on this button and you will see it.
teo_
Yes. It is, but only for IE. My default browser is Firefox and I dont see any choose for Fx.

I think Options window should be displayed after EULA window without clicking on the Options button. Why? Many end users don't clicking this button and going to next instalation step. When this window will be displayed, user will be inform about installation options and will be chance for choose options.
Denver Dave_
I certainly never saw the option and rarely read an EULA that I can make heads or tails out of. Good place to place something if you want few people to notice it.
Raul Liive
Optiplex please try to install 2.6.0.53.

Is your installion problem corrected now?

I also get the toolbar in firefox installed with a huge bar under my status bar with a red ^ symbol. i uninstalled the toolbar, and reverted back to the old one from the download section, and everything seems to be working fine again. but i would like to test the new toolbar.

here is a screenshot of my issue as described above.

Thank you for your input on this matter.
Since it is not in my ordinary area - the toolbars forum - I regretfully missed this thread!

Anyhow, I would like to add a few comments:
1. False positives such as tennis scores and other non-phone number numbers that are highlighted. We are making major efforts toward becoming much better at avoiding thes kind of mistakes. The next beta should show significant improvements.
2. Installation issues. Installation is always a tricky issue, both technically and in terms of what to install etc. We are attempting to find the right balance between simplicity and adding more features.
It has been a joy to work with the Mozilla framework in general, but we do have some issues with the installation. I apologize for the trouble!
