Is it possible for me to get a DID number (For incoming calls in my area code) and then have skype detect the number I've chosen. ??

anyone know of a view canadian (specifically calgary) for some DID's. Vbuzzer is full, thats the only one i could find that was sooooo cheap

Hey nickname!

Wouldn't a DID number be great then we would not need SkypeIn which is not available in Canada.

However a standard DID will not terminate with your Skype Client. Only Skype has the technology to do that.

Let's hope we get SkypeIn numbers in Canada in my lifetime.

Regards,

Bill

heres what i did.

download X-Lite or XTen eyeBeam. Register a number with www.didww.com for $5/ month. Map the number you get to call centric by using the mapping feature. Then register with www.callcentric.com. There will be all the necessary information to configure your X-Lite or eyeBeam to connect to call centric.

I've tried it out and it works for incoming calls like a charm! and then I just use skype for outgoing calls. smile.png living on my own in my new house paying only $5/ month for a phone line?!?! WAHOOO!

Cool !!! Thanks... Just signed up with DIDWW and got a Calgary number. I decided to go with fwd (freeworlddialup or something like that) for incoming calls because they had voicemail and my calls seemed to be clearer with them (I'm overseas right now). Also like DIDWW because you can forward your calls to ANY SIP provider out there!!!

Thanks a million! When my relatives call my SIP number, it's actually clearer than when I call using skypeout and less delay...

Just changed from a Skype-Supporter to SIP! Thanks for the good times skype.

thanks for the tip. i'm going to have to try it, just for the free voicemail.

i suggest to keep checking www.vbuzzer.com for a calgary number soon. i was told to check back in a month as they have some numbers on order.

if only skype was available in canada!!!

I was shocked too, but now that I am getting setup with SIP protocol, I'm really enjoying the freedom. I'm using a gateway and don't even need the computer to be running! My house phone rings when someone calls me -- I'm suprised Skype doesn't get setup like this.

I still use skype as I have a lot of computer to computer conversations, but SkypeIN would have to change quite a bit for me to order a number now even if it was offered in Canada!

By the way, great website! I'm overseas in a non-English speaking environment <i.e. no church, yet> and am enjoying your website!

Thank you so much for this post. Based on your information I got a $5 phone number in Toronto using Gizmo and CallCentric. It may not be as easy as just getting a SkypeIn number but I waited forever and it looks like Skype is not interested in Canadian VoIP market.

I posted instructions on my blog:

Same here. That's what they get for ignoring us. Bound to happen as it forces people to look at open standard alternatives over proprietary ones. Here's an article on how to connect a DID number to a Skype account:

I don't understand it fully yet as I am new to this stuff but I am going to hack away at it.
