run alsamixer, hit F4, turn on capture for Mic and Capture, turn the Capture volume all the way up and try again. hope it helps.

Very same problem here. Ubuntu 6.06, I can hear my microphone when I talk with it - also in Skype - and nobody can hear me. For some reason, after a few calls it says 'problem with audio device'.

Same problem here, except I can't hear myself. "Echo123" testing doesn't work.

Ah, I must have misexplained;

I can hear myself in my microphone if I turn on speaker output in alsa, and then talk into my microphone. As soon as I am in Skype, tests such as echo123 are useless.

Have you check the audio system and device used?

Tools | Options... > Sound Devices
Audio system to use: OSS or ALSA
Calls: /dev/dsp or /dev/dsp1

I have indeed.

Well, if you told us what your sound card is, that might prove helpful.

I have the beta working fine on ubuntu, but I still have a lot of misgivings about Skype's software, particularly its proprietary communication protocol that does not interoperate with anything else out there.

It was, however, nice to get the beta to work because I must admit i had lost all hope that they would ever release anything at all. Still, this beta pales in comparison to the windows version in richness and completeness.

I have a Sound Blaster Live! Value edition.

I never could get the non-beta to work, either..
