The only thing I have dicovered is that there is a way to use the 8700 with google talk and with Yahoo.

I think that the nearest to Skype is Google talk though I have not try it yet. Let me know if you try it.

Tried both Yahoo and Googletalk on a 8700g with TMobile UK both work well as chat but do not have voice functionality but great for chat you can download from here...

I think we won't see Skype on Blackberry anytime soon. RIM is still in the GPRS/EDGE era, and these connections are too slow for voice.

The new beta IM+ Skype for Blackberry works GREAT - no desktop version running at home required - it's standalone on the Blackberry. Just tried calling Mom back home, it's fantastic. Go to shapeservices.com to download free 7-day trial version.

I have tried WebMessenger for Skype on my BlackBerry 8700 on Cingular. It works BUT....
1) WebMessenger requires that you have a PC running with Skype on at the same time as you're using Skype on your BlackBerry. (You also need to install a small plugin to Skype on your PC)
2) when you make calls over Skype from your BlackBerry to another Skype user, system uses your SkypeOut credits... so the calls are not free.
3) it took me 2 days to get it configured properly and 9 emails with WebMessenger customer support.

You can download it here:
http://www.webmessenger.com/products/mimskype.htm

As this article says: http://www.skypejournal.com/blog/archives/..._october_20.php
WebMessenger for Skype is only a BRIDGE service. It works fine as such once you've figured out installation.

( Hint: one can easily get confused between the various passwords required for
- your account in Skype (on your PC)
- your web account in WebMessenger.com (on the Web)
- your WebMessenger Skype Desktop plugin (on your PC)
- your WebMessenger Mobile for Skype (on you Blackberry)
Eventually i made all my passwords the same, and it worked.

Also, i used these setting for CINGULAR Access Point Name:
APN:wap.cingular
User name:WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM or blank
Password: CINGULAR1

Btw WebMessenger email customer support is pretty responsive; responds within a few hours.
Good luck!! )

Next, I'm going to try another product: IM+ Skype, which a reader of this blog recommended (see below).

Hope this review helped you!! cool.png tongueout.png

I'm really confused about the whole skype on a blackberry thing but I want to use it for sure if it's possible. I have a new 8100 with T-mobile. I have a US phone on a US plan but I'm in Switzerland most of the time and roaming on Swiss com (EDGE connection). I have unlimited data but my voice service is supposed to be blocked. My company pays the tab for htis. I learned that my voice service is not actually blocked but I don't want to use it anyway because I'm sure they'll notice the giant bill and then actually block it. It will be nice to have voice again whe I travel to the US.

Anyway I'm confused on whether or not these blackberry skype programs use the telephone or just the data connection. I read one review of IM+ Skype and the guy said it calls you back when you make a call from a number like 000012356 - WHAT? Is it using cell phone air time (BAD for me) or just data (GOOD for me). I need to know because I think if I use regular calling it will bill my company something like $2.99 a minute whether it's incoming or outing. If IM+ Skype is not working just over hte data connection is there something else that is?

I'm totally confused about how these things work.

I want ot use skype out and in from my blackberry if at all possible but I don't want to pay for it and set it up unless I know it's going to work without using any voice air time. Can anyone clear it up for me?

Also can anyone clarify whether you can use this both with GPRS/EDGE connections and WIFI or BLue tooth like with a wireless router in your home on a blackberry 8100?

Thanks.

I now use IM+ Skype from ShapeServices on my Blackberry 8700 on AT&T (ex-Cingular in the USA).

http://www.shapeservices.com/en/products/d...p?product=skype

It's the best Skype client that i've found so far for Blackberry.
Costs $25 (+$3 for handango download rights - which i think is worth it)

It does NOT require that you keep a computer on with Skype running.

Data (instant message) communication works very well, and is free with my unlimited data plan.
Skype phone calls work too (although not always), and can be very cheap (see below for trick).
IM+ Skype has a nice user interface, cute sounds, and shows you how much money you have left in your Skype account.
Sometimes it signs me off or does not sign me on automatically when i turn on my phone. Then i just have to sign back on. Not a big deal.
Their customer support answers emails quickly and is friendly.

To answer brh986's question, data goes over data transmission:
For calls, as i understand it, IM+ first calls your correspondent on Skype, then calls YOU back using Skype to whatever phone number you give them. For instance, you could be on your Blackberry at the office, tell IM+ to use your office number (it's just a Profile setting), and call a friend on Skype. Then IM+ calls your friend (on Skype = free) and calls you back on your OFFICE phone, which is cheaper (on Skype) than calling a cellphone. And it does NOT use your mobile phone minutes. Ingenious!!

Hope this helps!

I have just downloaded and installed iSkoot (www.iskoot.com) for my 8800. It took some time to get the download sorted out, including emailing iSkoot support, but I got there in the end. Chatting is free, and nothing needed on any PC at the same time. I don't (yet) use Skype for telephony but iSkoot says it can do that, too.

If this helped anyone, please look for my earlier post (waking up an old thread) about sorting out Contacts who are, but realy are not, in a chats and who cannot, therefore, leave or be added!

Hi, I´ve been browsing and see 2 viable alternatives here: the webmessenger and the IM+, I have not tried them yet, but will do soon.

What I want to add is another way around... iskoot. I downloaded I skoot for my bb some while ago, and it works fine. It works in a different way. You call a local number from your bb and that local number makes the connection to the person in your skype or skype out list.

It adds a little since you are making a local call... but for long distances it saves a lot and works great!

Best regards,

PD. Peter... I just got an 8525, is on the list of only chat support for skype... what I dont get is that: if there are reports of the version 2.1 working. Why is it not available???

Thanks.

I would try Iskoot (www.iskoot.com) rather than the programs below that you have to pay for. Iskoot is free and Skype is partnerhing with them for the software for the Skype 3 phone, so it sounds like they'll be around for a while. I'm trying it now. Will retract this message if I don't like it!

I wrote MyToGo for Skype, it works with ALL your Phones and devices ("If they can supply dial tone and use touch tone") it does require a computer running Skype, but it requires NO software to be installed on your phones or devices, and it is free and has no middle man, it works best with Skype Pro and SkypeIn. MyToGo for Skype even works for example, with landlines as well. More information here:

http://www.testing.onlytherightanswers.com...icle&sid=58

The important differences between MyToGo for Skype and other seemingly similar services are it works with ALL your phones and devices that provide dial tone and can use touch tone and can also call MySpaceIM friends as well as Skype Names anywhere in the world and you can check your Skype voice mail as well from your devices and phones, all for no Skype charges. You control MyToGo for Skype, there is NO middle man, you run it when you need it, no need to share your Skype passwords with anyone when using MyToGo for Skype.

Of course you can also call PSTN numbers ("Telephone Numbers") using Skype rates for local, long distance and International calls when Skype rates would be more cost effective for those calls from your devices and phones.

MyToGo for SKype also has a unique feature. Say your brother, sister, son or daughter needed to call your blackberry, cell phone, or landline, was on Skype on their computer, but not near a phone. If you authorized MyToGo for Skype to allow them, they could call your Blackberry, cell phone or landline, using MyToGo for Skype without their Skype name having ANY Skype Out Credit, by calling your Skype name, with Skype and from anywhere in the world as well.

It's also very very FREE!

Dude, your website is super wordy, to the point of confusion really. I'd recommend more thought out documentation without the repetition I see there, and maybe a few screenshots! It works as you say, but when I assumed I'd be able to place calls over Skype without burning my cell minutes, I was sadly disappointed after spending what I did on everything, just to find out that it simply doesn't work that way. The reason we want to use Skype over our mobile devices is to save minutes! I don't want to burn minutes AND pay Skype rates, it doesn't make any sense! I'm not placing international calls, just domestic long distance. All I accomplish by making all this work is the ability to burn minutes talking to Skype users for the normal AT&T rates, or PAY MORE by paying AT&T AND Skype on any other normal call. Be a little more up front before you have people go through and buy Skype Pro, SkypeIn and Skype credit.

Skyfred,

Just realized what you were saying about your trick to redirect the call to the office phone. But it still places the call on the Blackberry? I'm a little confused, but testing it out now. One thing I don't care for too much about IM+ is the length of time it takes to get signed on to Skype, but other than that, the voice calls are pretty good.
