I always got the error message 1108 "too many login attempts, retry in 10 minutes" when I started.

Solution:

I installed Skype under Ubuntu 6.06 as root. Hence, the folder .Skype was owned by root and Skype couldn't write nor read the folder as a normal user. Change the ownership of .Skype to the normal user and everything works fine. Skype then write into the folder upon the first startup.
