Full Version: "Problem with sound device" 1.3 Beta First Call
Skype Community > English > Skype for Linux

I recently installed the new beta for linux, and it's working pretty well, overall! I couldn't get previous versions to work at all, so this is great. I'm running it on Fedora Core 4, and I'm using Alsa.

My problem is, the first time I try to make a call (Test Call), I get a "Problem with sound device" error. After I disconnect that call and try again, it goes through fine after that (until I close skype and restart it).

Does anybody have any ideas why this might be happening, and what I can do to fix it? I'm guessing it has something to do with an Alsa configuration, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Hey turtle03,

"Problem with the sound device" is standard when you are not using ALSA.

Did you make sure that your ALSA is enabled instead of OSS. Also check this in skype options/tools menu.

I had an issue with that with 1.3 beta because I didn't reconfigure/delete previously used hijacker and related files. If you used them as well, make sure that you delete them --> about that check postings at the beginning of the very first section on this page (New Skype 1.3 beta...). ps: I'm using Ubuntu

The note you mention is/was standard, there are plenty of brainstormmings around...

Thanks. I remember I had messed around with the asound.conf and .asoundrc files before trying to get it to work, so I tried to restore a good version of those, and I don't get the error anymore.

Unfotunately, now skype can't pick up the microphone. sadsmile.png I can record and playback with arecord and aplay, but not with skype. I'll keep checking around, there must be a solution somewhere.

I got it working properly by removing the .asoundrc file in my home directory and creating an asound.conf file in /etc that looks like this:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

I found this ALSA faq useful:
