I have installed 0.90.0.14 on both SUSE 9.0 and 9.1.
It works flawlessly on 9.1 but is not usable on SUSE 9.0.
I only see one process on 9.1 which is good in my view.

On 9.0 I end up with around 8-processes related to Skype after
a consistent hang of the program. I have to kill all these process to get out
of the program. I have never been able to successfully establish
a call from 9.0 I have qt3-3.2.1-56 on my 9.0 machine.

I can upgrade this 9.0 machine to 9.1 to resolve the problem but
I was hoping someone might have some suggestions for me.

Cheers,
Bob

On my 9.1 box I have one process, but on my
Suse 8.2 box I have 5. It runs normally on both machines,
so I don't think the process count is a reliable indicator.

Does this happen all the time on your suse 8.2? Anyone else?

My guess is the process count depends on wether or not your QT libraries are compiled with multi-threading support or not. If Skype is running without multi threading you'd only have one process.

I might be talking out my butt here though - haven't tested it.

I experiencing exactly the same problems as mentioned above.

I downloaded the rpm and istalled it on Suse 9.0 Prof and it doesn't work at all. I can start it connect to the skype server and after some more clicks in the program it frezes and can only be closed by killing 8 processes called skype.

What's wrong there ?

Maybe I should update to 9.1 anyone knows how to do that without buying the Distri. (how do I download the whole FTP thing ? )

Thanks a lot.

You can get SuSE 9.1 personal CD free of charge from http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/ft...al_iso_int.html. (Anyone knows if something similar is available for 9.0 ?)

As far as I remember the release of that particular came as a surprise for most people in the Linux community - I am pretty sure they never released free versions before.

At the same time though, I am pretty sure that all older versions can be installed for free from FTP, I only think it is the ISO's that is buyware !

There are actually liveCD-s from earlier versions that we could try (9.0), but I'm wondering if there are actual installable versions.
christianfelge_
no for 9.0 no iso images are available. 9.1 is the first version of suse that offers iso images.

I will probably just make an ftp installation/update

I'm using SuSE 9.1 and I have problems, sometimes it works flawlessly, at other times, the other end can hear me, but I can't hear them or neither of us can hear each other --- broken sound both ways at times. echo123 works flawlessly, connect to another user and the problem is still there. It's been useable about 1 day in the last 7 or so. I also use a hamradio VOIP program that is always perfect. I've tried on two 9.1 boxes here, including a 9.1 x86_64 laptop, makes no difference. I filed a bug report last night.
I also tried the Windows version under Crossover Office with exactly the same symptoms.
One more thing -- I also get what sounds like a drum solo being played, listening closer, it sounds like reverberation of the sound from the other end, happens even with my microphone muted.

I have exactly the same problem on Suse 9.0, KDE 3.2.2, QT3 V3.3.1-2
Always at least 8 processes, sometimes it runs ok, sometimes it crashes immediately. I've been able to establish a few calls, the quality was ok.
But when the computer is idle for a while, skype always crashes.
I hope someone has a solution for this.

I could upgrade to 9.1, i have the disks, but i upgraded the whole KDE already on my 9.0, and it's newer then the one provided with the 9.1 install disks, so it gives a lot of conflicts with the installed packets when i start the upgrade.I'm a bit scared it will mess up the whole thing, and I don't want to re-configure everything, so i cancelled the upgrade.

Regards, steve.

Okay, everybody is having the same problems on SuSE 9.0.

I agree, I had problems too until I figured out a trick.

Symptom: after starting skype, after about 15 seconds, it freezes. Sometimes it freezes my whole graphical environment.

What I do is immediately make a call, even to a invalid number.

This seems to wake up the system and keep it from feeezing.

I have found that this same problem (and trick/fix) works with the 0.90 and 0.91 versions under SuSE 9.0.

Other than that, it works great on my machine.

Oh and what you are all seeing for multiple processes under SuSE 9.0 vs one process under SuSE 9.1 is the difference between LinuxThreads and NPTL (Native Posix Threading Library) under SuSE 9.1.

Under LinuxThreads (SuSE 9.0) each thread shows up as a process.

There is nothing wrong with that, it just scares people.

Don't worry, don't be scared...
