I think what Skype needs is easy portability, in the form om remote contactlists, just as MSN and ICQ (and probably others to) have.

It's really a problem, that portability is so poor. When one gets a new computer, or installs skype at home and at work, they have to add ones contacts again, or keep a seperate profile to store the contacts while upgrading, recovering from a crash. That also entails having a seperate login name for home, work, school, etc.

Finally, Skype also needs to have a mechanism so when I have added my friend to skype once, I won't need authorization again, if I add them at a different time on different computer, or remove and re-add them

Therefore, I encourage you all to go to http://www.publicmind.com/enduser/group.jsp?node=653 and vote for the feature, as Skype uses this to evaluate which features to incoroprate

I found this. But there was nothing below to click?

Run Skype from a USB memory stick!
Use Skype easily and quickly on the move, retain your contact lists!
Go 'mobile' with your Skype, keeping your buddy list with you. This skype wrapper makes it very easy for you to use skype at work, home, laptop, wherever, without having to worry about your settings & user lists. You can carry Skype on your USB thumb drive. As the Skype user files are not stored on a server or allowed to be stored in a user-defined folder, use this wrapper that copys the files to the harddrive, launches Skype, then when Skype closes the mobile copy is updated and the harddrive copy is removed. This also protects your privacy as the files are not kept on the harddrive. Click below to purchase and download the mobile Skype wrapper, with instructions for simple installation:

Mobile Skype for Removable Drives (such as USB memory sticks)

I saw it here: http://www.mathaba.net/software/skype.shtml#top

Running the program on a memory stick! Is it possible at all? :?:

This is a non-sense. MSN and ICQ have a centralized server-client architecture. Jabber has a decentralized server-client architecture (similar to newsgroups or email). Skype has choosen a P2P architecture, thus there is no server, and nowhere to store your contacts but locally.

If you don't like that, then you don't like P2P, and Spyke is not for you.

there is a user here in the forums, doomdead is the name, who took the time to develop such a tool (for some reason, i find it very strange that in the link you had provided the same program is offered to be purchased, although you can get it for free :? )

just take a look at this topic: http://forum.skype.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=...2944&highlight=
and some of the stuff that were written there:

Concerning 'mobile' skype, keeping your buddy list with you. I developed a simple skype wrapper that is making it very easy for me to use skype at work, home, laptop, wherever, without having to worry about my settings & user lists. I build it for myself. I carry skype (along with a mobile copy of trillian and other things) on my usb thumb drive. Until the skype user files are stored on some server or allowed to be stored in x folder, i have set up a wrapper that copys the files to the harddrive, launches skype, when skype closes the mobile copy is updated and the harddrive copy is removed.

Be nice to just be able to say \"store skype user files locally to the skype exe\" but that is not an option.

If anyones interested in my program, let me know and ill share it along with the source.

I dont want to host link just yet. pm me with your email and i will send it over email including source and instructions on how to get it goin. i just want to keep an eye on how many people are using it.

if it becomes popular enough i'd be glad to host it.

btw, it worked flawlessly for me...

P2P does not preclude have the same configuraion on multiple computers. Have a look at Groove.net. That's P2P and you can log in on multiple machines and use exactly the same configuration on each. All it does is recognise when you're logged in more than once and send updates between the 2 sessions to keep them in sync. Groove is actually a lot more sophisticated than that, but you get the idea. When you sign in, Skype could search for other instances of 'you' online and fetch any profile and contact information from that other instance.

I was surprised to find there was no way of 'sending' my contacts to another machine (but it sounds like its possible to copy them by hand or use the wrapper).
