I think is a bug of Skype.. I have MSN and other programs working with HTTP proxy.. I have enviroment variables http_proxy and https_proxy set correctly (I need that for run APT too) and all ok.. but Skype only shows "Connecting"... I also put Windows configuration files (shared.xml and also tried with user conf) (same proxy, same configuration) cause in Windows works but.. nothing... same result.
In Skype FAQ for Linux the answer of proxy configuration is only "set http_proxy enviroment variables"....
I think Skype has a bug with proxy configuration sadsmile.png
And also I think we must wait a lot of time for a new release of Skype for Linux :-(

It works for me. It can take some minute to connect.
Check your login/password. Or try an invalid login/password if it can check that.

hi folks!
I've got the same problem now (I mean, before I reinstall my system, I hadn't this problem)
now skype freeze on the "connecting" window ... if my memories are good I think that the working version was token from an unofficial repositorie (i'm not sure..) but concerning enviroment variables everything is ok (APT is working correctly)

Please I'm tired of rebooting to Windows only for using Skype!

To use Skype on Linux follow these steps:
1. Install Skype.
2. Copy shared.xml from Windows to Linux (in order to have the settings for proxy server).
   cp /mnt/c/Documents and Settings/xyz/Application Data/Skype/shared.xml ~xyz/.Skype/
(xyz is the account name in Windows & Linux.)
3. Copy your username directory from windows to Linux (in order to copy all the friends list).
   cp -R /mnt/c/Documents and Settings/xyz/Application Data/Skype/abc ~xyz/.Skype/
(xyz is the account name in Windows & Linux. abc is the Skype username.)
4. Enjoy Skype  :D
