SKYPE was not working on DAPPER after upgrading from BREEZY

actually it never really worked right in Breezy either but it does now.

Dapper Version : 2.6.15-22-386
Skype Version: 1.2.0.18_API

Skype installed fine using skype_1.2.0.18-2_i386.deb (NOTICE the -2) directly from Skype's download. It was downloaded to the desktop.

http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-deb
To upgrade the version of skype:
I opened the terminal from the panel menu:

APPLICATIONS - ACCESSORIES - TERMINAL

and typed

cd Desktop
sudo dpkg -i skype_1.2.0.18-2_i386.deb

Skype started fine but I was having a similar to other problems listed here except I was receiving ....

/dev/dsp-1: Device or resource busy

After messing with the controls I decided to check the sound settings.

From the panel menu : SYSTEM - PREFERENCES - SOUND

I unchecked the "ENABLE SOFTWARE SOUND MIXING"

and SKYPE started working correctly for a few hours.

SOLUTION:

Downloaded the Hijacker listed at the link below.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SkypeHowto?h...ht=%28skype%29

No sound at all and kept receiving a "write error, written = -1" People could he me talking but I had no sound in retun to hear them and none of the system sounds were working.

Turned back on the

From the panel menu : SYSTEM - PREFERENCES - SOUND

I checked the "ENABLE SOFTWARE SOUND MIXING"

still nothing.

Next from the terminal

apt-get install alsa-oss

when it finished installing I restrted Skype and everything including system sounds are working.

Whew.

Did you get Skype 1.2.0.18 to also work on Dapper **at the same time** with other sound-making apps (Rhythmbox, Totem, ...)?

Yes it was yesterday.

Today I ran the updates and made a change to the dbus for power settings and now the sound setting has to be in the disabled mode again.

I use our Skype, not for chatting, but as a phone. It was working fairly well in Breezy after renamming the ring file so it couldn't be found.

I'm no pro at linux yet, but I don't mind getting into the command line to get more info.

I've been starting Skype this way so I can get the console feed back and see what is going on. It looks like the Skype software wants to have complete control on the /dev/dsp or it fails to make calls.

If any of the Staff members there have any suggestions --I'm all ears.

i switched to dapper (not an upgrade, but a clean install) a couple of days ago and have successfully used skype 1.2.0.18 without making any changes to dapper's or skype's sound configuration.

i'm currently running dapper and skype on two thinkpads -- R51 and T43.

note that i had a **lot** of problems getting skype 1.2.0.18 to work properly on breezy (tried most of the solutions offered in this forum and ubuntu's and finally got it to work more or less ok).

I also was able to get Skype wokring out of the box with Dapper. I think it works great! Would be nice if it would automatically switch to my headset when I have it plugged in, but changing one setting isn't bad.

if anyone has found a solution to the pointer error problem outlined on the ubuntu forums http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1...highlight=skype
and http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=171761 as well as all the accompanying links on the second page?
i have tried everything they list but still get the same pointer error. using gstreamer-properties i find that i am unable to use the ALSA input setting because alsarc does not exist. i'm not exactly sure where that file should be, so this might be a problem as well, but i am pretty sure that the pointer error refers to the soundcard, not the microphone. currently running the 2.6.15-23-686 kernel on a Thinkpad T40 with an AC'97 sound device. skype worked before changing to dapper xubuntu, now it does not (this is from a fresh install, not from a dist-upgrade).

after a fresh frustration-based reinstall, i was able to get skype working correctly, however, as soon as i configured scim, i started running into problems. it seems that using the im-switch command to allow me to use scim in an english language locale on xubuntu is the cause of the pointer error listed. it's not a sound configuration issue at all, but this is much more troubling... so currently, in "locale en_HK" i can use skype but not scim, while in locale en_US i can use scim but not skype! this is absurd. how am i supposed to tell chinese monolinguals that i want them to use skype? haha. if anyone else has managed to get BOTH scim and skype working at the same time, i'd like to know how. would switching to skim help since skype is a kde application?

I looked at the thread you linked to and it look like you found the solution (set XMODIFIERS), but it should also work if you install the static version of Skype, without setting those environment variables. One downside is that you won't get the KDE themes, you'll get the plain QT one. Scim still doesn't work. Also, switching to skim won't help, I use skim anyway and it never worked for me.

I have had exactly the same experience. Gave up using Linux for a while as Skype is essential for my business. Decided to give Kubuntu 6.06 a shot after hearing how slick it was, and Skype installed via Automatix works like a dream. Now back on Kubuntu full-time and have had hours of perfect quality calls.

If there is a minor update to Skype for Linux, I'm staying well away from it. If it aint broke... smile.png
