Speaker Setup:

2 Channel Only
OSS Emulation through ALSA

Playback --------------------------------------------------------------------
Master, Master Mono, PCM Surround, Center, LFE, Line, CD, Mic, Phone, Aux all at 90 Volume or around there.

Surround Jack Mode: Independant

Mic is muted on Playback
Mic is 20db boosted
Mic Front Input is off
Mic Select is Mic1

IEC958 is Muted
IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA is 0 volume
IEC958 Playback Source is IEC958 In

PC Speaker is muted

Mono Out is Mix
Channel is 2ch
Duplicate Front is off
External Amplifier is off

Capture ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mic is selected as the capture channel
IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA is 0 volume
Capture is 100 volume

Maybe it's just me, but it took me about 50 years to come up with this combination. It occurs to me that this didn't work with this combo before, but hell, what do I know. Without this config I had no sound at all through skype, however regular playback through media players, etc, was fine through /dev/dsp1, which is my ck804 card. Odd.

You saved one life by this posting. That would be mine. :-)

I wasn't as lucky as you, and 50 years were not enough for me to set the correct values. (My Skype had same symptoms.)

I'll add my MB specifications, that's how I searched most of the time (not by audio controller): MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum, NForce4 chipset, integrated onboard audio chip (Realtek ALC850). Hope, that'll help others who may be searching this forum.
