Please Please Please!

Do you know how cool and how handy it would be if there was at least a Skype IM client for my blackberry.

I know everyone want talk and yes that would be cool but just having the skype IM feature avialble using the TCP connectivity.

It would just rock.

Second!
valnoren_
Yes a second! I'm surprised either there are fewer BB users than I think or not many use skype.

I wonder how many skyper's use BB's
ugotdav_
I so agree! I don't know if Skype is keeping and eye on the amount of BB users there are but it has grown to be the largest PDA/phone hardware used today. I'd like to incourage Skype to expand even SkypeMobile to BB!
valnoren_
Yes Skype Mobile for BB would be a sweet combo! I'd drop the phone service side of my Tmobile BB account so fast if that was the case.

What discouraging is you keep hearing Skype talk about every device combo for Skype mobile except for BB. There is skype for PocketPC, Palm and I have heard symbian? But never any talk about BB?

again Id be thrilled with just IM client for BB.

I found the im clients for aim, msn, google talk etc etc but skype is the one we use in the office due to the encryption and would be so useful to have!!

I also agree, probably would not want to use my 10MB per month on skype voice traffic but the idea of having the IM would be really cool.

Cheers

I don't like that solution. Too troublesome to use it.

yeah forget that. A native Skype Client for the BB PLEASE!!!! i'll help write it damnit ahhh wink.png

Yeah, a native client is the way to go. I use the EQO mobile beta client (works very similar to this WebMessenger referred above) but you need to have this stupid plugin always running on your desktop PC in order to use Skype. For me the plugin is not that big of a deal since I never turn off my PC @ home but its still a clumsy solution... when I chat, it shows up on my computer, when I talk it rings on my computer as well... basically its crap. I don't know about WebMessenger but EQO's user interface is pretty horrible and unintutive too.

Wonder if the BlackBerrys have enough power to run skype through... I briefly had the Cingular 8125 and I remember that the thing had to be overclocked in order to run Skype a bit smoother and it had a 200Mhz TI CPU in it if I'm not mistaken. Anybody know if the BlackBerrys come even close as far as performance (I have the 8100 pearl).

Thanks.

Unfortunately todays fastest Blackberry's (the 8700 and Pearl) both use a 312 mhz processor. This isn't fast enough to run a full blown Skype client, or even the Pocket PC version (as it requires a minimum 400 mhz processor) if you could port it to Java. However, there is no reason Skype couldn't release a IM only version for the BB.

Having said that the Sony Mylo is using some new software, that greatly reduces the CPU cycles require to run a 'embedded' Skype client, so the tools are there to produce a Skype client for the Blackberry, but not the will as of yet.

With the next generations of Blackberry's that are wifi enabled, or work on HDPSA networks - Skype will be a killer app., for the BB for sure.

Check out www.shapeservices.com for the Blackberry Skype download. It's free for 5 days as a trial.

Good luck

WOZZA!! The new IM+ beta version of Skype for Blackberry ROCKS! No desktop version of Skype running - it's standalone on your Blackberry (I'm using an 8800) - and the telephony is great. Gonna save a fortune on my long-distance now...!

IM+ for Skype works fine on the 8700c as well. Skype wherever I have a cell signal. Beats lugging around a laptop and trying to find wifi.

Since the IM+ software calls you back you pay SkypeOut charges plus of course the cell phone carriers minutes will be used up as well. You end up paying twice. Still cheaper to use cell cals for domestic calls. Big savings for US to international. However if you're abroad you'll still get stuck with huge fees to receive the IM+ calback while roaming.

The chat feature is totally free worldwide. I'll probably use chat more than voice calls.

Wonder how long before Cingular block this service like they did Yahoo messenger.

About the IM+for Skype software...

I downloaded and paid for this program call "IM+for skype" from shapeservices.com few days ago. It works great, beside one small but serious problem. There is no "remove contact" option in the menu. So there is no way you can remove any contacts.

The previous version allowed you to remove "some" contacts.
My story is that the first day I installed the program, there were couple unknown contacts I've never seen before show up in my contact list. I wasn't able to remove them at all, even I clicked "remove contact" for 32 times, it just wouldn't go away.
But! It worked when I tried to remove other contacts I know (included skype out, skype)

In the end, I thought downloading a latest version would make this problem go away. Well...not exactly, the latest version doesn't even put that function in the menu.

Have anyone experienced this problem before? Is it solvable?

IM+ and all these idiotic solutions are hardly "solutions".

From ShapeService's page:

IM+ for Skype works worldwide in any 3G/GSM/CDMA network and doesn't require WiFi.

Yeah, great. What this means is that it uses your PHONE plan. If you're at home, and can in fact use your free wifi at home, then you're out of luck.

With a Nokia I can use Fring and be done with it. It's FREE. These BlackBerry tools are NOT free. Before you know, you rack up your phone bill. Not only that, IM+ itself is not free.

Native Skype for Blackberry please. It's about time!
